Hopefully there'll be a translated version of the game for Android, too.

It's available via a DRM-free DVD-ROM on Rightstuf right now. Not sure when it'll be available 100% digitally though. |

This thread... I feel like I'm taking crazy pills...
... it's been available digitally since its English release... just because it's not on Steam doesn't mean it's not available digitally, lol... |

They explained it in an interview. They have the rights to distribution on PC from the Japanese, and not the rights to distribution on Steam. Apparently, these were two separate rights. |

Coincidentally, I just finished watching the anime for the first time last week. I might just have to pick up the game. Does the anime follow the main route of the game? How closely does the anime follow the game or does it mash multiple routes together?

Steins Gate was all ready to go on Steam. However, 5pb games decided to pulll the plug on a Steam move, because in Japan they have a Steam alternative that 5pb own and they wanted to put it there. The SciADV series as a whole (of which Steins Gate is a part) has been screwed over time and time again in the West due to 5pb's poor choices and their complete ignorance of the Western market. First we had Chaos;Head, which was all ready to come over. 5pb's demands were unreasonable, and Chaos;Head never came over. Then we had them block Steins;Gate going on Steam, in favour of putting it on a Japan-only platform despite the game already being readily available there! Then we had another chance for Chaos;Head, and again they couldn't offer a reasonable deal. The switch to console-only for the SciADV series then made it impossible for the rest of the series to come over, and then they put Chaos;Head Noah and Steins;Gate on Android and iOS, made the description in English and... didn't translate the game at all. Then we have the decision to put Chaos;Child as an Xbox One exclusive, completely ruining its release. Then we had the decision to localise Steins;Gate Zero, not by doing what they did with Steins;Gate, which was very successful over here, and letting a dedicated team of fantranslators here (particularly Reading Steiner, a guy who has done loads of SciADV translations, available on his blog), but instead they decided to fudge with that. No, instead they decided they're going to translate it "in-house", and given their track record, this means you can't rule out a machine translation for Zero. The sad thing is Steins;Gate on its own is one part of SciADV, and to get the whole story you really need to play the others. Steins;Gate might be an isolated plot, but there is a bigger picture going on that just Steins;Gate alone will not convey. And thanks to 5pb being so bad, they've successfully screwed any realistic chance of SciADV as a whole ever thriving in the West. See, you can bring over Steins;Gate on its own, but you can't bring over Chaos;Child without Chaos;Head and Robotics;Notes, particularly Chaos;Head. And you can't bring over Robotics;Notes without Chaos;Head either, because Robotics;Notes links the series together with it's plot reveals. And now we see Steins;Gate is coming out on iOS - why? It's already easily available in the West, why not use this platform for Chaos;Head Noah instead? |

The anime follows the true route. The other routes are more alternate endings, which were cut for obvious reasons. The anime itself does a pretty good job of adapting the VN - there is some detail that was missing, and a certain scene in Chapter 9 involving Nae that was entirely cut (which was a damn shame) but overall it gets the job done. Not perfect, but good enough. It's the best SciADV adaptation by far, in any case. |

Ah, okay. I thought that it was that they just didn't have the rights to publish it digitally, period, for the longest time. Glad to know it wasn't the case. |
