Why do you think Japanese nationals are the final say in Ghost in the Shell? The people who really are affected are ethnic Japanese-Americans (and other minorities) who are severely underrepresented in American media. As an ethnically Japanese person, I can tell you that while Ghost in the Shell itself doesn't exactly anger me, that it's one in a very long and awful trend DOES anger me.

Why are you and CrowLia trying to read more into my comment than there actually was? I was just amused by the thought of getting input from those of another country. The fact that the original source material is from Japan, I figure it would be best to ask them. Look at it from a 3rd party perspective?

Have you ever seen the youtube series regarding Yuta? I forget the full name of his videos, "something with Yuta". While overall the pool of opinions come from a very small amount of people, it's interesting to watch him ask standard Japanese people questions about National or International issues or about words that may not have any real meaning in Japanese.

Just keeping things light-hearted...

Perhaps I have grown somewhat obdurate, but as I read these quotes I saw images of the live-action Dragonball film flash before my eyes. If the casting and setting decisions were made on an aesthetic rather than a financial basis, as the producer wishes us to believe, then I imagine he could have provided a more detailed explanation than what was given here.

@SaitouHajime101

Maybe it's because I've seen way, way too many people that use, "Well, Japan isn't bothered," seriously as an excuse.

Anyways, sorry I misread you.

I'm just not confident in the people who are writing/directing. That's my biggest concern.

The Hollywood thing was inevitable, as much as continues the problems Asian American actors face. Honestly though, this should have been an adaptation called something other than "Ghost in the Shell" but based on the same original stories. Lone Wolf & Cub is actually a good comparison because there's already an American adaptation of it -- Road to Perdition. Magnificent Seven, A Fistful of Dollars, and The Departed did basically the same thing, but without trying to cash in on the existing Asian names.

if people really cared about not wanting this to be white washed then they should be pushing for this to be made by a Japanese film company and not hollywood. it would be cheesy effects, low budget, and ok to bad acting but hey you would get your Japanese actors. Big budget movies are not going to have no name actors in the lead roles because studios are not going to risk that money making a movie that bombs because people didn't like the actor.

Also a seventh thing: If you guys are SO confident that they could have used a Japanese actress because there are so many Japanese actresses in Hollywood... name one. The only one I can do is Rinko Kikuchi, who is too busy with the Terra Formars movie.

What a lulzy excuse. Hollywood should not take any movie project that requires actors of a certain race that aren't White, Black, or Latino.

This is still a thing huh. Lets set some things.

1. How many people were honestly gonna watch this to begin with? Because the consensus is usually that anime to live action movies especially Hollywood produced ones aren't setting the world on fire.

2. Hollywood is still a BUSINESS. And a buisness will try to maximize its profits any which way it can. In this case its placing ScarJo as the lead because of name/brand recognition. You as an anime/GitS fan are not the target the studio is going for. They want the casual viewer who likes ScarJo.

3. Even though some of you don't want to hear this it needs to be said. The US is still predominantly white. So for all the bellyaching on social media about oscarssowhite/diversity/whitewashing/etc... Hollywood studios are still gonna pander to the majority.

4. If you're still upset by this go complain to Netflix right now about the recent Death Note casting. That includes Black L.

If this movie sucks, and it likely will, it won't be because of the ScarJo casting. Just let go of this thing.

Funny thing about Scarlett Johansson's so-called "Star Power" though, her only big movie outside of the MCU where she wasn't just providing a voice is Lucy (which also came out in a shit summer-May, June, July, August). You have to wonder how much of that movie's success was due to her, the fact Morgan Freeman was in there, and also the premise.
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/people/chart/?view=Actor&id=scarlettjohansson.htm&sort=gross&order=DESC&p=.htm

As has been shown as of late, Star Power isn't that much of a thing anymore. Johnny Depp is worth nothing anymore (his last three profitable movies were the last Pirates of the Caribbean (2011), The Tourist (2010), and Alice in Wonderland (2010)*), Chris Hemsworth is worth nothing to people when he's not wielding a big hammer, and even Robert Downey Jr. isn't worth that much when he's not wearing an iron suit.

*I don't count Into the Woods because his role was actually extremely minor in that one.

Casting aside though, this movie was doomed from the start. I doubt it'll be good, and I doubt it'll do that well at the box office excluding China* (which is set to be bigger than the NA box office by the end of next year), especially if the budget is at least $150 million before P&A (print & advertising) costs.

*Something to note, China has various restrictions. They pay out only 25% on non-Chinese co-productions rather than 50% (i.e. studios take 25% of the gross from China in most cases), they allow around 34 foreign movies a year (this is why Star Wars didn't hit until January 2016, Point Break was the last foreign movie allowed in 2015), and there are blackout periods where no foreign movies are allowed to play (that is why Ant-Man opened so long after Jurassic World, that was the last foreign movie to be allowed there before the blackout period).

At no point did I speculate as to Masamune's opinions or argue that he should have any particular opinion, nor any other Japanese national. My sole concern in this thread has been the thoughts and feelings of Americans.

(This is coming from black person) How this all different with Attack on Titan, or Full metal non of thoes main chareacers are asian . ( Except Misae) But there play about asain actoreses, and actors .

Anyway, getting Shirow's opinion, whose original work was arguably straddling soft-porn, is not the same as getting the opinion of Ishii, who was arguably responsible for making GITS the franchise that it is today, nor is it the same as getting the opinion of the Asian-American actresses who were not given the role. The US inflicts social invisibility upon a number of marginalized identities, including Asian-Americans, particularly Women, and particularly in the arena of body dysphoria. Look up double-eyelid surgery, read a scholarly article or two; there are girls out there who are convinced by the inundation with the white sanitized ideal that they feel impelled to surgically alter their bodies to "look more intelligent" or less "sleepy or dimwitted". The kind of visibility this opportunity has just taken away from Asian-American Women is despicable, and that white men (i.e. Paul and Sanders) are saying meh to it is the same kind of ignorance we're seeing with the resistance to the recent removal of "man/men" for Marine Corps job titles. Out of curiosity, how many of you "it's not a big deal" people are white? How many are cis-male? No need to answer me, but you should consider that if you are part of the white, especially male, demographic, your opinion is biased by the fact that you're on the opposite pole of the social-experience spectrum from that of any marginalized identity.

Akira didn't work out for you, Mr. Pitt? Perhaps you shouldn't leave a good show after season one by having your character killed off. YOU LEFT US WITH GRETCHEN, DAMMIT!!!! Next time? Yeah. I hope this works out better for you this time.

I wonder if he is actually an anime/manga fan? Could be neat.
