Fantastic pickup! Never got around to this one due to not wanting to bother with the butchered U.S. cut of it. Looking forward to it!

This will definitely be a pick-up for our Godzilla collection, nice to get the original film uncut.

>only Godzilla vs. Biollante remains now
And as a Godzilla fan I can easily say Return is one of the best. |

That's been released on blu-ray already (was out of print for a bit). Am hoping we the original Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla at some point. |

There's also 'Son of Godzilla' I believe that still needs a re-release as well. Last time I checked, the old copies of it were going for insane prices on Amazon. I think there's a few that still need released with their Japanese versions intact as well, right? At any rate, super happy to see this, as this is one of the three films (the other two being the aforementioned Mechagodzilla and Son) that I don't at least have in some version or another. I cannot wait to get this. |

I never saw "The Return of Godzilla", I saw "Godzilla 1985". (As it was known when it came out in the US a year later in the New World dub.) With the tribute Raymond Burr scenes and the Dr. Pepper placement.
I can understand the Japanese change of "1984"'s title to something less dated, but some things are sacred. (And yes, I even got the timely scene-specific GZ84 parody gag that turned up in a later UY episode.)
That it is, friend. Since GZ's return is treated as more of a Sacred Cultural Icon in this movie, there's more gravitas here than in all of the '14 US movie, and easily more than Biolante or any of the new-era films up to Destroyah. Back when movies showed on TV, a friend who had never seen the old 60's movies watched the epic spoiler[volcano] end of Return, and started to get curious for what appeal the old movies did have.
Oh, that's what happened to them! The three used to be at Sony, but I wondered why I couldn't find Sony's 00's restoration of Ebirah to its proper widescreen colors, out of PD limbo. (Where's Son of GZ, though?) |

I've been expecting this to be released eventually, although I expected it to happen around the time of the Legendary Godzilla's sequel to cash in on it. Finally glad this is getting the original version released in North America after 32 years! Way to go Kraken!
Since it does exist though, I'm hoping they can get the HD scan of the US version as an added bonus. So far "English dub" can very well mean the international dub, which would be interesting for comparisons sake since I had never watched the movie with that dub. But I'm just happy that this movie is finally going to be available to North America in a medium that goes past the VHS era :p |

And thus, Godzilla is finally complete on US DVD at lest.
I suspect they'll release the remaining films on blu ray to promote the next US film when it comes out. Still, exciting to know our Godzilla collections will finally become complete! |

AS a Godzilla fan, I can say Godzilla 1984 is one of the least... I even prefer Godzilla's Revenge- yes, that one- over it. No message, no meaning, no monsters, no point. I guess it's a good catch, just in time for the home release of Godzilla 2014 so good for them.
Yes, I was expecting Section23 to do more of these years ago. Better late/early than never? I still have my VHS of Godzilla 1985 even if I haven't had a VCR for decades. I "downloaded" the original Japanese version alongside the Japanese Godzilla vs King Kong; One I treasured, the other I never bothered to watch. I'll wait this time seeing how cheap those other Kraken Releases got. |

I've never seen the Return of Godzilla but I guess now is a good time if any to start.

I'm pretty bummed that it won't be including the Godzilla 1985 US version that I grew up watching, but still, at least this is something. At least I've still got ye olde vhs tape *sigh*.

Finally. Good catch, guys.
I need to keep up with all these Godzilla releases, so far all I have is the Criterion BD of the original. |

Fortunately, the Classic Media releases of the subbed originals (with the 60's dubs optional) are still available on R1 DVD, individually or in boxset of the first Big Eight: http://www.amazon.com/Godzilla-Collection-Vol-Yuriko-Hoshi/dp/B000VXWK86/ (For some reason, the box doesn't include the restoration of "Godzilla's Revenge", but that's still around too: http://www.amazon.com/All-Monsters-Attack-Ishiro-Honda/dp/B00125WAYQ/ ) And now that Dreamworks has changed hands, hopefully we'll have a parent company that will actually do something with Classic Media properties and get them onto Blu-ray. We can but hope. |
