Don't pretend to sound mean or uptight. But is there even a fanbase for Avatar? Or, rather, are there people sad that the movies are delayed?

Four sequels seems rather presumptuous when they haven't even made one sequel. Plus, the visual spectacle of a 3D movie isn't going to be a reason to see it like it was for the first movie.

Right? I don't know anyone who's clamoring for an Avatar sequel, much less four of them. |

I don't know anyone who considers Avatar to be a good movie and even going online most people agree it's nothing special story-wise yet it still made big money which warrants 3 sequels apparently. I really don't get audiences today.

I expect that these movies may be pretty big bombs. I mean Avatar was not a very good film. It was one of the only movies to do 3D well and as a result tons of people flocked to see it. But the amount of time in between the first and second movie is going to give folks plenty of time to think about if they really care at all for the characters and universe. I mean yeah it's pretty and all but that alone will not sell it and it certainly won't sell 4 movies.
If they had made the 2nd movie and saw a equal level of success I could see making big plans like this. But really assuming people are gonna care about 4 more movies in a series that has since fallen off of most peoples radar seems foolhardy to me. |

Well, if it means anything, the original made $2 billion outside of the US and Canada and since Hollywood movie sequels typically tends to make more money in the foreign market than their predecessors (when they do drop, it's almost never as bad as sequel drop off in NA), it's hard to imagine the drop off would be so bad that they wouldn't make a profit (especially with the fact that China's box office has been booming like crazy in the past couple of years). That said, greenlighting four sequels is still pretty gutsy to do. Last edited by Pokenatic on Fri Apr 15, 2016 11:00 am; edited 2 times in total |

I am. I liked the first one enough to check out a sequel. Cameron was talking about how much he wanted to do in this world and how he will be shooting underwater a lot for the sequel so I'm excited for that. Is it worth enough for 4 sequels? I'll have to see, but he's been working with a team on the scripts since the first one so I'm confident enough in him and how he always ups himself in some way with every film. |

Why exactly is ANN reporting on Avatar?
I must admit that i chuckled when i read this new earlier in the day as The King of the World now officially declared war or Star Wars and Steven Spielberg. Cameron is the 3rd biggest director ever and Spielberg is currently No.1. Not for long though... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_highest-grossing_directors Never count out James Cameron i always say as Avatar borderline managed to start a religion! This project probably won´t manage to out gross the MCU but Fox is abut to print money nonetheless and i will certainly show up for every single one. I wonder if Michael Biehn will get a roll? |

Read the article, and you'll know what it has to do with anime. |

I've got some friends who really like it, but more for the awesome tech behind it, rather than the story itself. That's one way to enjoy a film, I guess. |

I guess tetralogies are still the new trilogies.
edit: Although I suppose this technically means Avatar is going to be a pentalogy. Last edited by Lemonchest on Fri Apr 15, 2016 11:24 am; edited 1 time in total |

@varmintx Oh i read it AND the Deadline story but still can´t managed to form a coherent connection between Gunnm and the space Smurfs. Neither could the writer but that person certainty smelled the clicks! We would also "need" to get continuous updates on Avatar as long as the series goes on (2023 and counting!) by that same "logic"... No update on the Robert Rodriguez situation = no connection to the purpose of ANN. Shrug.
This years CinemaCon offered a lot of interesting announcements btw. and Avatar was up for the Best Film Oscar. I would have nominated it too for the same reason SW IV was up for one. Films like these is what big budget Hollywood was made for! Last edited by residentgrigo on Fri Apr 15, 2016 11:24 am; edited 1 time in total |

If this news permits a generalisation, we may posit by means of induction that the Battle Angel Alita adaptation will be delayed by 6n years for every n years in which the director mulls over his past successes. Fans of the franchise may confer amongst themselves whether this merits any disappointment.
