I just wish Hosoda would add shading to his movies. They'd certain look better.

Because I loved The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, and Wolf Children, I had high expectations for The Boy and The Beast.

I didn't enjoy it much. Sad I was struggling to stay awake during the first half (admittedly, I had a really rough work week and was exhausted). It wasn't nearly as endearing or charming as any of Mamoru Hosoda's other films. It was overly cheesy. Several plot points went nowhere or simply didn't matter at all (or didn't make much sense), and most of the action scenes were pretty uneventful and had no suspense at all.

I also watched the English dub, so I don't know if this was apparent in the original Japanese, but I found most of the characters to be annoying, especially Kumatetsu.

Sorry to be so negative. Aside from the beautiful visuals during some scenes (for example, the intro was AMAZING), it felt like such a let down from a director whose work I love so much.

Saw the movie back when it first opened here in Japan, and I have to say I found it to be by far the weakest of Mamoru Hosoda's original films (not counting franchise films like One Piece and Digimon). It really felt like it was missing something, which is probably his usual co-writer. Beautiful animation but really lacking a soul. Really disappointing, since Wolf Children is one of my favorite Japanese movies of the past five years.

That's more money stateside. Can't wait for a DVD release later this year. So now we're getting the English version, so that's good.
