I imported the VIZ inuyasha DVD boxsets (I live in Australia) and when I play the DVD the colour looks washed out, its still colourful but not as vibrants as the PAL inuyasha DVD's. I have a multi-region DVD player. Is there a better quility DVD player that fixes the NTSC to PAL problem?

The washed out color might be from the DVD mastering as well as the translating from one format to another. Is this a problem you have had with other NTSC DVDs as well?
Some newer players also let you chose between RGB, YPbPr, YCbCr 422, and YCbCr 444 for color space modes. You might want to play with the different settings to see if one of them looks better than the others. I believe that the DVD data is stored YCbCr and eventually needs to be converted to RGB somewhere between the DVD and the final image. My television and processor accept all the settings and they actually look fairly similar in quality when the YCbCr is translated to RGB in the DVD player, processor or television, but I have heard other people claim that it makes a difference if one of these components does a better job than the others. If your television doesn't accept the outputted color space the colors will be obviously messed up and I've seen the effect since my processor lets you select the input manually. As for your question, better quality than which brand DVD player? My first PAL to NTSC DVD player was a RJ Tech player which looked awful and didn't even have a digital audio out, hence no DD or DTS! I quickly replaced it with a mediocre JVC which looked much better. A couple of years ago I bought the fantastic Oppo player which will take in either a NTSC or a PAL signal and output it in 480, 576, 720 or 1080 resolution which looks fantastic compared to the JVC. It also had less jaggies compared to the JVC and upscales the image. So the answer could be yes depending on how good your DVD player is. My current setup has my Oppo outputting DVDs in their native resolutions into an external video processor which then translates the standard definition source into 1080 as well as does the deinterlacing. The image looks much better in both sources and it does a great job with 2:3 pulldown which is more of a factor with us 30 FPS television owners than you 25 FPS folks. Although most PAL anime discs are taken from their 480i masters there are a few discs (like the stunning Only Yesterday) which are mastered in PAL and look amazing when upconverted to an HD signal. If you own a large number of NTSC DVDs (I'm a huge fan of British science fiction and comedy and own a ton of UK R2's) I would say that this is definitely the route to take, although external processors do cost from $1000-$4000 so might not be worth it for only a handful of DVDs. I just posted other features of a video processor on this thread yesterday. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=901477 This is a sub-forum dedicated to VPs. AVS also has a nice DVD player section in their forums that might also help you. |

If your television can support NTSC at 60 fields a second natively your best bet would be to buy a DVD player from the States and you will have the same DVD to Television setup as most people in the US.
By RYW do you mean component cables? The quality for DVI and HDMI is slightly better for video, but sometimes introduce some HDCP (copy protection) headaches. HDMI also carries audio which is becoming increasingly important since Toslink and Coax digital audio cables don't have enough bandwidth to carry the new high definition audio codex. As far as brands go there really isn't too much difference especially when going digital. I like the physical design of Belkin cables, but they don't make your DVDs look any better than cables that are a fraction of the price. The same goes for Monster cables that are priced a good 500%+ what they should be. I do own a couple Monster Power Conditioners and a Monster UPS that I bought on eBay for about 1/4 retail price. |
