Rather than bad, "wasted potential"'would be much much more appropriate.
Adjust your expectation accordingly, since if you assume this one is as strong as the first one, you WILL be disappointed

It's interesting, with regard to Asterisk War and Chivalry, that the community, since about episode 5, consistently prefers Chivalry, and aside from episode 7, the reviewers have consistently rated Asterisk equal or better. Granted, the ratings for the reviewers were usually close, such as B vs B- or B versus C+.
I think the two shows make their well tread genre, magic school action harem or whatever you want to call it, respectable again. Especially this year, it's been full of tropey mediocre crap (all of which I have seen btw). People seem to like Chivalry's more satisfying approach to romance. Asterisk has put more effort and money into the animation than any other in the genre for a while, though as the last episode shows, Chivalry is no slouch in the animation department. More generally, both have executed much better than the average in their genre. Now certainly they aren't AOTY material or even AOTS but they are probably the best in their genre for at least a year. I would say in general but Raildex holds that position.

I had an open spot for one more show and between these two, I chose Asterisk. I'm enjoying it, but I keep wishing I had chosen Chivalry, since a good number of my friends say it's better. Maybe I'll pick it up next season if it ends strong.

This is a good summary, and you should feel good about yourself.
Seriously. Nicely written, quite accurate. I'm watching both, and while there are structural flaws in both, they are worth complaining about because the shows themselves are really pretty good. In fact, I'd say the biggest problem they have is that they are good enough that I really want them to be much much better.
