Man, Geneon must have really blown it with their harem shows.

I hope this means their shows will get decent advertising now. I've yet to see any advertising whatsoever for When They Cry, and very little (and not very good ones) for Rozen Maiden and Karin (the latter can probably do all right on its own, but is it any wonder that a show about dolls isn't selling well when the only advertising is a half-page spiel just showing Shinku standing next to the lead?). The only ones I've seen good ads fro are Saiunkoku and Black Lagoon. Note that I'm talking about magazine ads, where average fans are likely to see them, not online banners.

So is this like a partnership? What does this eaactly mean? ADV will just put commercials and ads of geneon titles in Newtype and on Anime Network?

I think so. My friend said that she saw a commercial of Saikano long ago.

On the face of it, this doesn't sound good for Geneon. Basically, they agreed to have their competitor advertise their own products. It seems to me that such a move makes sense only if their competitor (ADV) is acquiring their company (Geneon). Perhaps, Geneon's advertising and marketing capabilities are so limited that they need to outsource these tasks to another company - but why would they chose to outsource it to one of their major competitors? I sincerely hope Geneon is all right.

No, because ADV has nothing to do with that aspect.

They'll probably do that, but it won't be just that. It means they are in charge of ALL marketing, so they will handle all of the advertisements from the ground up. They will also handle other marketing aspects that may not be quite so visible. They will also be in charge of distribution, which means that they will be in charge of getting Geneon's products to the stores.

Saikano is owned by Viz, and if it was a long time ago, what does that have to do with this?

It's hard to say. It may be that they figure that ADV just has more options or something. But it is quite possible this is a cost cutting measure. As I've said, their recent ads have left something to be desired, so if it means better advertising and saving money for Geneon, I'm certainly for it.

Also, while they are competitors, its not quite the same as, say, Microsoft and Sony or two hairspray products. Their competition lies more in getting the lucrative licenses in the first place. After that, its not a zero sum game any more and people can get both products. Certainly, there is a limit to how many any individual can get, but tastes are incredibly varied so its impossible to say that title A from company 1 is taking sales away from title B from company 2.

Anyone remember that synergy thing that ADV, Geneon and Funimation got into years ago?

this is quite some news. Does this mean that we won't get any of the recent quality Geneon dubs like the Requiem from the Darkness dub?

that's not saying for all dubs but hey I liked that dub.

Let me get this straight:

ADV will be responsible for promoting and distributing a competitor's titles?

Something's going on here, and I know as much as Mr. Jones does.

That's nothing new. Geneon was distributing Bandai Visual's titles at first, and there have been similar things between other companies. I believe Geneon used to distribute for Bandai Entertainment or something as well.

See my above post regarding the competition between companies.

This deal has nothing to do with production, so the disc authoring, the translation, dubbing, etc will still all be done by Geneon.

I wonder if that includes prices as well. I can almost imagine a Geneon DVD title on Best Buy costing only $19.99 like all the other ADV's DVDs. Anywho, if ADV gets their hand on the marketing aspects of it, I wonder if we're going to get BETTER TRAILERS this time. Using creditless OP sequences DOES NOT constitute as a trailer. Mad

I forgot about the trailers aspect which desperately needs to be fixed. I wonder if that's part of this deal or if that falls under "production."

As for the prices, yes, distribution plays a factor. But its not the sole factor, so its had to say whether this will result in better discounts.

So you're saying Geneon handing over their marketing/distribution apparatus to ADV is neither unusual nor harmful to itself? What about conflict-of-interest issues regarding ADV having to promote their own titles and Geneon's? That's what worries me the most.
