I know you worked on authoring Toradora, Justin, but I also liked that Toradora included a deleted scene of Ami's Impersonations. Not sure if the original NISA DVDs had them, but loved having that on the BD/DVD combo.

As far as I remember, BD release of the first half of Fate/Zero has added a lot of scenes.

It's like how when you see "deleted scenes" in the DVDs for American animated movies, most of them are at the storyboard level with dialogue superimposed (a bit like the last episode of Evangelion). This was true in the DVD release of The Incredibles, for example: in that particular case, there's one scene (a longer version of the post-crash sequence in which Syndrome's goons fly over them) which has actual animation, but you can see that there's a lot of unfinished touches, particularly that Violet is bald...I read that her hair took so much work to animate that it was always the last thing finished, and it shows in that scene.

Another possible reason for the existence of Deleted Scenes in Western animated works (usually from the U.S.) is that not in all cases they were truly "deleted", but were added as a bonus for the home-media release. I remember seeing some "deleted scenes" were the character twist their tongue and go "Oops. That was [other character name]'s line, right? *tee hee*," or there's a fast-moving scene (car chase, on-board a train) and a character "accidentally" knocks-over the boom mic, and other similar things.

Didn't Escaflowne have a lot of deleted scenes? I know there is supposed to be a edit they released in Japan with a lot of deleted scenes added back in.

With cel animation, there are many shows and many examples of deleted scenes that still exist. Cardcaptor Sakura has several examples where cels were produced for a particular sequence and were later discarded because the shading was changed or the character ended up facing the opposite direction in the final version. Episode 200 of the Sailor Moon series originally had healed Galaxia facing the opposite way (I have a cel from this deleted version as well as the one used under the camera). So, deleted versions for cel based series do very much exist, however, as the majority of anime studios never mentioned this or included it in their extras. The only way you'd know about it is if you collected from the series and attempted to screenshot its exact place in the episode (or avidly follow galleries of collectors who own and do this kind of stuff).

The Fatal Fury 2 dub deleted Joe Higashi's entire introduction scene.

You can usually find deleted scenes in episode previews. I know Cutie Honey had a few. The preview for episode 3 is like 50% unused footage.

Come to think of it, did we ever get to see the scenes that Jeffrey Katzenberg personally cut from The Black Cauldron?

Considering how much work goes into 2D animation, I doubt they would make time for deleted scenes. There seems to be barely enough content for regular series animation, so extra animation would waste a lot wouldn't it?
I can see voiceover outtakes being common, but how often are those funny? |

Animation in general rarely has deleted scenes, and if the BDs/DVDs have them included, they're only ever gotten to the sketches or maybe a simple animatic whether the movie was analog or 3DCG. The decision to cut always comes before any real time or money is spent, so you're not going to see a fully animated and colored sequence of a Disney film that's been cut. From what I've seen in many recent animated feature films is that the farthest some deleted scenes got were from The Croods, but it still wasn't a completed scene as the lighting and detailing levels weren't finished for several of the shots, many of the shots for the scene still being in greyscale with simple computer models.

Yeah, but only for the first 8 or so episodes, and in this case the extra footage was made accidentally. From what I've seen of them, I think they're honestly not much of anything. Except for one or two bits, I can tell why they ended up on the cutting room floor. |

That's not a deleted scene, it's a retake. There's a quote a love which is apropos here with regards to how carefully planned anime is:
The outakes I may have had the most laughs out of from any genre are the fuzzy donkey scenes from Shrek where they left a bunch of scenes rendering overnight with the wrong settings. Unlike other test animation and rendering goofs from the movie, these scenes were fully rendered. |

Which can also be the case with the poster's examples of Robot Chicken and Family Guy, whose "edgy" gags may have tried to push the envelope with Fox and CN, and ended up getting a paper cut. (Also for time constrictions, commercial time, etc.) |
