I saw the first episode on the Otaku USA DVD. It seemed like one of those anime that could either follow the same storyline as anime just like it, or it could turn out to be a surprise and do something no one's ever thought of before. Should I continue this series, or is it just countless episodes of chopping up giant bugs?

i thought it was a pretty good series. my only complaint is the arcs were done in a very weird way, but the whole story ties itself together in the end.

My only problem with the show was the narrator. His simply being there to tell the story like someone would a children's book cheapened the whole thing, IMO.

We have a review of the first volume coming up soon (probably sometime next week), so I'll reserve most of my comments for that. But I must agree about the narration; I found 90% of it to be unnecessary, like we're being told a story instead of shown it, and that doesn't work well in a visual medium aimed at people older than 10. They could have gotten away with it if they had just used it to set the stage, like was done in Desert Punk.

Odd, I always thought it was the AI Tank doing the narrations, guess not judging by the show page. They really sounded alike to my ears. Confused

Anyhow, The Third is a decent series with some good characters, a cool science fiction atnosphere and nice animation. Apart from that it's not really outstanding or exceptional. In my opinion I'd say it could have been better, if they went a different way with the story.

The narrator simply has to do with the directorial style of the show. It's the same style as a number of recent Japanese samurai live-action dramas that are shown locally on TV here, but which other people probably don't get to see much of.

Many of these recent samurai shows have a narrator exactly like that one with the exact same voice, and he says the same kind of things, telling what the characters or main character is thinking or feeling inside. I'm not saying this is a good or bad style. I'm just saying this is an directing-related issue so if you have problems with the narrator, you should instead be complaining about the directing in general (most anime fans don't have a very good sense for good or bad directing I've noticed).

Or he can just say that he doesn't like the narrator and everyone gets the point. Rolling Eyes

I saw the first episode Dubbed as well on Dvd on one of Newtype USA's Magazine's the same way I saw the first Episode of Elemental Gelade

but anyway,it's a fair decent show and one of the anime's i'm currently watching right now,but yeah, like most people mentioned, the narrator always giving every detail on whats happening in the plot can get a little annoying.but hey,you gotta adment,it's quite rare and unique to see a storytelling anime like this (and No,not Counting DBZ) like you see in some old age cartoons, infact, the storytelling in this anime reminds me alot of that one old age anime that used to be on [b[Nick Jr[/b] called the Little Bits

Honoka is a pretty fair decent character, who's not always a overhype ditz like most stereo-type Anime females, she has her comic sides and her more seriouse side, the only problem I have with the anime is that they try too hard to make the comedy funny when it's meant to be a seriouse Anime. I mean, sure ,I got a few laughs of Bogey always nagging on Honoka for the first few episodes.
Razz ,however, to answer your question,it's not gonna be just mindless fighting like you see in most shows like Naruto or DBZ,what I read,it's suppose to have lots of development on the characters. and it's a short series for only 24 episodes.

other than that, this is a fair decent Anime I like so far with a plot taking place in a futuristic war with alien spiders, hope you enjoy the anime like I am,but yeah,in my opinion,it's worth a watch if you don't mind heavy narration stories involving a cute jack-of-all-trades Dessert Bounty hunter with a sword caught up in a war with a mystery alien invasion.
