While Umineko on Steam is great news, I'm miffed about two things.
1. No voice acting.
2. MangaGamer decided to be really lazy and lift the sprites used in the Umineko pachinko game, and use them for the Steam release.
Seriously, you thought nobody would notice?

Great to hear about Umineko, but why not use the PS3 graphics and voices? It was already perfect.

Short answer is licensing reasons.
The Sprites would be comparatively simple to apply the PS3 version (some fan collective did an edit of it a while back) but just as well officially the graphic works is tied up with the PS3 game.

1. It will likely be on the same engine as Higurashi, which was so easy to mod, fans on 4chan had working voices and PS2 art in about a week after release. Hell I could make my own VN with voices, text, sound, and models without breaking a sweat in that engine as a mod. Doddler is somewhat of a god in this sense.
2. They are probably only placeholders, they even have a tweet confirming that they are the pachinko models. But there clearly isn't enough of those to cover everything for the VN.
Also based off the QA section answers regarding Higabana and Rose Guns Days, Otakon will probably be when MangaGamer announces them as well.

It is good to see that more VNs companies are starting to release their material overseas.

Manga Gamer (and JAST) have been around for a while now, but releasing all ages versions on Steam is a relatively new thing.

Hopefully WH dont take down the existing patches. It's great to see more VN's reaching people. but it's kinda a pain for me since I have the Japanese versions for a lot of what's been coming out.

This is fairly surreal! We actually have a Sono Hanabira game being brought over here!
With this and Flowers, this is pretty damn good for yuri fans!

I believe I have asked this before, but as someone who isn't exactly interested in the Higurashi franchise, what makes it and Umineko so popular?

Doddler did write it to port VNs with troublesome engines to, so it being highly moddable is pretty much a given.
