i agree, a good choice of voice actors too!
shame about Petrea Burchard though, ryoko just doesnt sound right without her!

I would say of the animes I've seen.
Howl's Moving Castle It had a good English cast to do the voices. I didn't think any of the voices were out of place. Trigun I believe Trigun had a good set of voice actors for the English version. I thought the voice actor for Vash fit the character pretty well. Eureka Seven I thought they did an exceptional job casting the voices for characters in this series. I didn't hear anything I would consider out of place with any of the characters. I've seen some of it in japanese and I think the voice actors for the English dub suited the characters. |

The main advantage of English dubbing stems from the fact that English is virtually used everywhere. Which means, all sorts of accents can be used. Take your pick: British, French, Italian, Arabic, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Mexican, Southern, New Yorker, whatever.
I managed to realize this in Blood+ while listening to one of the characters speak English with a Russian accent. That's followed by the thought -- a Japanese voice actor cannot mimic that; though, I'm curious on their take of Russian. |

I don't know, I think they could. Just take a Russian, teach him Japanese, and bam! you have Japanese dialogue with a Russian accent. Though, I have no idea if the Japanese tracks actually try to mimic this or not. But saying they can't mimc it seems a little silly. |

I've used the same statement in regards to Americans making anime. 
But yes. A Japanese (or any other ethnic group) mimicking the accents of other languages, peoples, and cultures is quite more than feasable. It's just rare. It isn't as common as foreign accents done in English; that's due to English expanding virtually to every part of the world and its dominance as a business language. Both the former British Empire and American business (and media) can credit for that. |

Also to the average anime watcher, whether the original Japanese track had their VAs try to mimic accents or not, they couldn't tell either way. I know I can't. You first have to master a language yourself before you can detect subile things like word accents. Most just hear "Japanese" whereas in their own language they can hear an accent and say "That person is from the East Coast" or "that person has a Spanish accent."

I have to agree with most that Cowboy Bebop, Wolf's Rain and Samurai Champloo were very well done dubbed anime.
I do have to say that, even if this next title is technically a movie, dubbing credit must be given: Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children. Steve Burton was amazing as Cloud, David Lucas as Vincent made me drool and George Newbern as Sephiroth was greatness. It amuses me doubly since George Newbern was the voice of Superman in the animated series.  Rachael Leigh Cook was even pretty decent. Big kudos on the cast.
Advent Children is definitely at the top of my Good Dub List. |

Since I've been fortunate enough to have seen more excellent dubs than bad, I don't want to sound "choosey" with my decisions, but here are ones that I definitely give kudos for.
All the Disney-Ghibli dubs are excellent, no questions asked. There may be a few eccentric vocal choices and a couple of sometimes superfluous extra dialogue, but all of them are well-produced, acted, and written. Watching any of these you can hardly tell it's been dubbed over. Fullmetal Alchemist is another terrific dub. It earned FuniMation my respect. Vic Mignogna and Aaron Dismuke work wonderfully together as Ed and Al. I do confess to enjoying some ADV dubs as well, particularly Nadia, GoldenBoy, and Petite Princess Yucie--all three of these are exceptional dubs, although I do single Nadia out for my favorite because I admire how they cast actual children to voice the three young protagonists. It makes the dub as a whole more authentic. I also admire the use of accents, particularly for the Nautilus crew members, since they come from all over the world. Jean's French accent is a bit shaky in places, but the actor's enthusiasm for him overshines that weakness, and it's obvious that everyone involved really loved their characters, and it shows in the spirited performances they deliver. While I don't consider Central Park Media the greatest dubbing industry of all time, there are some dubs from them that I confess to have enjoyed. Lodoss War OVA and all three Slayers seasons are classic examples of older dubs which, although not perfect, certainly stand out among other dubs of their time. The World of Narue was really, really good, because I liked the chemistry the cast brought to their characters and how sincere they all sounded. Animation Runner Kuromi 1 & 2 were also terrific. AniMaze dubs are quite good; Wings of Honneamise, Akira (the 2001 one; I can't stand the older dub), Perfect Blue, and especially Outlaw Star are all top-notch. Ocean's dubs are shaky; I liked the Infinite Ryvius dub in spite of the show not being the best. The only other I've heard was Escaflowne, which was a mostly acceptable but uneven production with some good voices and a few lifeless ones. It's certainly not as bad as naysayers say, though, and the fact that it's uncut (unlike the hideous Fox treatment) doesn't hurt either. I haven't heard enough Streamline dubs to offer a valid opinion on them, but the only one I've ever really liked from them was Totoro. That was done very well, although I do have to confess that Disney's newer dub rivals it in quality. Great Conquest: Romance of the Three Kingdoms was also very good, particularly Pat Morita's narration. -Jon T. |

Heh. I actually like the old Streamline dub for Akira, if only because of historical context: Leonardo from the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon was Kaneda! While the Animaze dub is technically superior, it's just not as fun as the older ADR job to my ears.
The Disney dubs, I will concur, are all excellent. They are, indeed, naturalized to the point where the viewer may think that the movie was made in America (although that's unlikely, given the visual style). Golden Boy is an old favorite dub of mine, too. ADV does some pretty good stuff overall. Their Macross dub is spot-on except for two glaring problems: Mari Iijima just doesn't work that well in English, and nobody pronounces "Macross" correctly (did nobody listen to the already-established dubs of this series and it's spinoffs out there?). |

Now granted I might be a bit biased since I know some of the VA's in real life.
However some of the ones I think are terrific are: Tsubasa. I think the VA's did a rockin' job and to me make Tsubasa feel epic. I'm a huge CLAMP fan so I will admit I was a bit worried on how it would turn out. BECK Again I think the cast fits and I love hearing how much fun they have recording this one. Negima This was another one I was really happy with the results. Greg did a great job with Negi and it's one of my favorite's. Wolf's Rain This is another favorite of mine. When I first saw it I was confused by Toboe and thought the character was a girl. When it was dubbed it made more sense and the voice sounded more like a boy. Wolf's Rain is by far one of my favorite series to date. Again the cast did a superb job and I felt like the characters were well rounded and real. (In fact outside of a couple Puss in Boots posters, the only non-Funimation title poster i have is of Wolf's Rain) Most Ghibli/Disney Movies always sound great. However with their budget and celebrity voices it's hard to go wrong there. Lastly one of my new favorites is from ADV Utawarerumono I think the VA's are solid and to me that can make or break a show sometimes.

just a short post on what I think is a good dub
The only recent one I can remember is Black Lagoon But IMO, I think that Revy's voice is better in Japanese, I personally liked the roughness that Japanese Revy had, comapred to English Revy, which sounds okay, but a bit more girly. Rock, Benny, Dutch sound very good, and I think the Russian Scary Woman sounds good as well. |
