I had expected Spirited Away to head up that list, even if it's more of a thematic reinterpretation without direct references.

The discussion often turns up that the Japanese don't really seem to understand Alice in Wonderland; that is, less than we do, and marginally less than Tim Burton does. Wink
They know it involves falling into some "surreal" dimension, that it has a blonde English girl in a dress having tea (straight out of every Victorian/loligoth cafe' fantasy), and that magic things happen, although they think she's doing them herself. (And must therefore battle for her abilities, as in Gakuen Alice.)

When actually, Carroll was just making it up as he went along, out of old improvised picnic stories--
When we see the Mad Tea Party tell the story of the "three sisters in the well", that's about as close to a behind-the-scenes glimpse of how the book was written as you can get, with Alice providing the kibitzer interruptions.

And while sticklers will point out that Tweedum/dee never actually appear in AIW, and, like the blonde hair and blue dress, that's a myth created by the Disney cartoon, so is the idea that Alice ever talked to a talking doorknob before going through the door.
(Or groped its boobs, in Miyuki in Wonderland...HAD to bring that one up out of our collective memory, didn'tcha?)

but in recast roles with Marianne, The Lizard's previous maid, playing a more prominent role.

(Uh, the Rabbit's previous maid. The Lizard was just kicked out of a chimney.)

Just as a note about the shojo poll. Gekkan Shojo Nozaki-kun, despite its name, is NOT shojo OR josei. It's a comedy running in a shonen magazine, and happens to have lots of female fans. Shojo is aimed at a younger female audience (examples: Sailor Moon, Tokyo Mew Mew, Watashi ni XX Shinasai, etc). Josei is more serious/adult manga aimed at adult women (Chihayafuru (maybe), Natsuyuki Rendezvous, Bokura ga Ita). I saw it on the poll and was like WUT. The author's other manga Oresama Teacher is definitely shojo, though.

Halfway through the list, I thought "Wouldn't it be funny if Lain is in this list? If it is, it should be number one."

...

...

I didn't expect it to actually be there.

Oh, I totally didn't even think of Lain for this list. Nice quick reminder.

I too was thinking that Spirited Away should have been on here if only for what it represents within the anime world, but at the same time I'm glad it focused on things that were less obvious. Expected Black Butler too.

Miyuki-chan forever.

Would have liked CCS to have been on here as well. In addition to the cute 'Alice' outfit Sakura wore when chasing after "The Little", there was an episode where she ended in a Wonderland of sorts, with Eriol as the Cheshire Cat and Kero, in guardian form, as the Queen of Hearts.

They don't really understand much of anything outside of their own culture's fiction. They just skim the first pages of a foreign work and make up the rest as they go along. XD

Great to see lain and pandora hearts but sad Alice in borderland isn't on here. The creator of this list probably doesn't kno about it but it's a great manga!

How is Lain one? Even if their is a character called Alice, it was at most a nod to the story, and not even the focus of the show. A cameo can't be number one on a list of shows that are supposed to be based the work.

Its like saying Avengers is the best Stan lee film just because he makes a cameo in it.

Also wasn't their a hentai based on Alice in Wonderland, I thought it was called Miyuki chan in wonderland but I guess it had a different name. If we are talking about "mad" re-imaginings I would think that would be close to the top.

That was the first one I thought of, even if it was just an OVA. Also Alice in Borderland, which was also mentioned.

I'm really surprised that Mahou Shoujotai Arusu didn't make the list. It's literal translation is "Magical Girl Squad Alice," and the girl in question falls off a roof into a magical world.

Cool list i liked it

For the poll I'd take the Ark Maxim, a literal Noah's ark made of gold, assuming i can still run it without Eneru's electricity...i guess i could just hook up a battery or something.

No Alice in Sexland? I was hoping it was going to be on the list. It was one of the first Hentai manga I ever read.

The connection between Serial Experiments Lain and Alice in Wonderland is way too thin to be No.1 (but it is the one entry i care about). I know of Alice in Cyberland but still.
Fushigi no Kuni no Alice is a good children´s show and most people/adaptions didn´t get the novel(s). Here is how Cracked explains it: http://www.cracked.com/article_18787_6-books-everyone-including-your-english-teacher-got-wrong_p2.html Suck it mathematics!
(The amount of Alice in Wonderland porn is unbelievable btw. )

Actually, it was that Nonsense was the newest current whimsical Victorian trend after Edward Lear, and just like Monty Python grew out of the Oxford footlights clubs*, Alice was the product of a logician/mathematician playing around with nonsense from a logical perspective.

We all think, for example, that the Cheshire Cat telling Alice:
Quote:
A: "Would you tell me which way to go?"
C: "That would depend on where you want to get to."
A: "I don't much care where--"
C: "Then it doesn't matter which way you go."
A: "--As long as I get somewhere."
C: "Oh, you're sure to do that. If you walk long enough."

is some kind of stoned-out riddle-ramble, until you read it again, and realize...yes, it would be rather hard to argue with that logic. Confused

Although Carroll does parody word-problem math in Through the Looking Glass:
"Division: Divide a loaf of bread with a knife, what's the answer to that?"

* - The Pythons always had fans saying "You guys must be on drugs!" in the early days, just because fans couldn't get why characters in sketches were talking about dead birds 'n stuff--Actually, they thought they themselves were the sheltered upper-class Oxbridge nobs, and bandleader Neil Innes was the cool "hippie".
