I seem to remember that the opening sequence of the first series of Hayate no Gotoku included the strobe-light warning being acted out by Hayate and Nagi - ie Hayate catching Nagi playing a game in a dark room while sitting right in front of an enormous screen. However, there was something about it which made me think it was not being taken entirely seriously, and the director's tongue was very firmly wedged in his cheek! (But then wasn't that in the natuire of the show - at least in those early days?)

As a current viewer of subbed Pokemon, I can confirm that the show still uses the "please watch this anime in a well-lit room and sit far away from the TV" warning at the beginning of each episode.

No need to. As far as management is concerned, entertainers, especially idols, are disposable with a short shelf life to begin with. Can't handle the stress, make a mistake, there are always newcomers looking for work. |

That too, since we're not seeing the "Grando Sponsor Tokyo Day Oh Christmas" stuff anymore. I think fansubs cut all that stuff out as well since they were just added unneeded filesize. |

Yeah, I actually find this more distracting than the infamous "beams of light" or other blatant tactics they use to hide the naughty bits. Strangely enough, that never happened at all during the early/mid 2000's, years after the Porygon Seizure episode was released. |

Yup, Steam Detectives has it too. I don't remember if Blue Seed has it, I don't think it does. |

The sit back from the TV warning was also in Full Moon O Sagashite. Meroko is pulled back from the TV by Takuto.

I would have to disagree. At the current rate, they will run out of new light novels to adapt in the near future. It is already noticeably they are animating some less than great/older material. Nowadays is not about if they are going to adapt the new best seller manga, but when. So sooner or later they are going to need new material to adapt. Of course it would be too much of a hassle to adapt anything owned by disney/warner (unless they ask for it, like in Marvel Disk Wars). But there is plenty of good material from smaller publishers. We already saw some of it when they adapted Witchblade into an anime. So mark my words, it is not about when we will see anime based on non japanese manga/light novels, it is about when and who will make the successful first big step (companies are risk averse, but no one argues with success). |

4Kids was also forced to edit all previous episodes' lighting effects. It's obvious. They dimmed the lights in places and slowed down flashing. This is back when 4Kids' editing was really crappy and easy to spot. Without even watching the Japanese version, you can tell exactly what they edited. They did much less of it too.
Porygon was also banned from the series and pretty much everywhere outside the games. Even though Porygon had nothing to do with the specific incident in the show. Also, the Japanese news reports replayed the scene in question and sent even MORE people to the hospital. Idiots. Not sure why the entire episode needed to be banned. Just edit the flashing lights like the other episodes and call it a day. It's actually a pretty cool episode if you've seen it. I hope the dub gets released one day. The incident probably contributed to American parents' xenophobic fears about Japanese media invading kids' entertainment in the late 90s. |

Yep--I remember when it was "Violent porn cartoons and epileptic Pokemon". Nothing in between. As for "causing", think it was more of a chicken-and-egg which came first: It was the first time we'd heard from the scare stories of an actual Japanese children's series, and what luck, it was harmful! |

Tons of anime still uses the seizure warning text at the beginning of the episode, but it's usually reserved for kids shows like Pretty Cure, One Piece, Naruto, Fairy Tail, Detective Conan, and etcetera. Adult focused anime generally doesn't have to warn kids so they don't. It's only kids shows that need to air the warning.
Also if you watch legal streams you're less likely to see it as someone mentioned. Detective Conan's legal stream options cut out all the advertisement narration and text on the screen, including the warning. But if you watch the fansubs, it's still there.
There's quite a number of Pokemon that are essentially banned from ever appearing in the anime ever again. Along with Porygon and it's evolutions, there's Rougela (Jynx) and Yungerer (Kadabra) being the two most noticable ones. Both stem from international complaints about Rougela being a racist characature and Uri Geller trying to sue Nintendo for saying Yungerer was based on him. Pokemon in general tends to bend it's knee towards international pressure, which is incredibly rare to see for a Japanese franchise and why modern games take place in random international countries like America and France. I wonder if that's part of the reason Youkai Watch is currently beating it out which seems to revel in it's Japanese heritage and culture. I wonder if Nintendo will make the next generation of Pokemon set in Japan again to respond to Youkai Watch. -Stuart Smith |

Another interesting effect of the Pokémon Shock incident is felt on reruns of old anime -- or at least Dragon Ball Z Kai, anyway. Scenes that used similar strobe-like effects or rapid flashing lights had to be re-edited, or even entirely reanimated.
Can't help but wonder if they'd do the same if they reaired the remastered version of Sailor Moon; that final battle against Beryl is some flashy stuff! |

There's a number of western properties I feel would make a decent anime, or at the very least the only way they could ever get an adaption if through anime. Animorphs is a good example. It was a children's book series but all the violence and blood in them prevent any kind of real American children's adaption of them, but the violence is no worse than what you see in Naruto and One Piece. There was a live-action TV series on Nickelodeon back in the day, but it was pretty bad. But at the same time I'm wary of anime adaptions because I generally only like anime adaptions if the writers have free reign to do what they want. As much as I found Disk Wars Avengers a fun show, I have this feeling Marvel had more creative control than they should have. The show was only marginally more violent than an American cartoon, nowhere near the level of other kids anime, and outside of a few suggestive keyframes that had more detail than usual there was zero fanservice. It was noticibly more sterile than kids anime usually is so I think Marvel or Disney had something to do with that, maybe with the idea that they may want to air it internationally with as few edits as possible. Also there seemed to be a bit to convenient timing with when the Guardians of the Galaxy and other characters who had live-action movies appeared which felt too pre-planned and executive meddling-y.
But I agree Japan has plenty of material to work with already so focusing on adaptions of foreign works is understandably low on their priority list. So things like a Harry Potter anime adaption are just a pipe dream. |

Haa, yes. I remember, they had the 3 girls sit right infront of the TV, lights off, switching channels and fighting on who's turn it is to decide what they gonna watch, and Minamoto Kōichi comes to room, yelling something like "Hey, girls! I'm working here. Please quiet down a bit, lit up the room and sit further away". That was a nice way to incorporate the warning into the show |
