Holy shit, this is fantastic news. Hana and Alice is in my opinion Shunji Iwai's second best film, so the idea of animated prequel makes me really excited. It will be interesting to see Iwai's aesthetic carried over into animation, though there have been some anime directors ,like Makoto Shinkai, who have been influenced by him.

Just curious, but what's #1? I'm a "Love Letter" fan myself. I like "Hana and Alice" too, though it's a much looser, more aimless feeling film.

This is gonna be a boring answer but I consider "All About Lily Chou-Chou" to be his best film. "Love Letter" is good film, but I prefer "Picnic" and of course "Hana and Alice".

Thanks. I still haven't seen "All About Lily Chou-Chou," and should probably remedy that.
