Unfortuantly I am a sucker for Sub/Naval flicks, so I will probably be picking this up at some point.
Question: Is the Sub/underwater theme just a setting? Or is it an interactive backdrop in which the characters clearly need to deal with circumstances that arise out of there plight on a regular basis? Or in other words, is it a big of enough deal for a Scifi/Naval/Sub/Space geek to enjoy?

I only saw the first episode and part of the second one so I really can't say for sure, but it seemed like the sub/underwater thing was just going to be a setting type of deal. The reason I didn't keep watching was because the characters all annoyed the shit out of me, though, so beware.

Man. I was hoping for more of like... Blue Submarine No. 6, not more Mars Daybreak. I should have guessed when nobody was talking about this (at all) that it was iffy ay best. Now my favorite internet reviewers are split on it.
What to do, what to do....

This seems to be a hit-or miss title for people . I really enjoyed it (I also enjoyed Mars Daybreak and Blue Submarine No. 6) but I could easily see how it might not be to everyone's liking.

I think it's worth a watch. You'll probably enjoy the setting and some of the themes, but like I mentioned earlier, this really is hit-or-miss with people. I've read reviews from others who enjoy this genre (check over at AOD) and it's getting a lot of praise, but I've also heard from people who just weren't into it. I think it's one of those things where if it sounds like it's you thing, there's a good chance you'll like it. So if you're curious, it's at least worth a rental or it's cheap enough to just blind buy.

I had no idea what this series was about when I ordered it. I watched Blue Sub 6 a few weeks ago on the off chance that it was set in the same universe. I'm surprised at how different the two series are, but love them both although they both remind me of Last Exile for some reason. The animation has a weird Yoshikazu Yasuhiko tinge to it with it's Western style visuals. The female lead even looks like a Yas girl and the captain is a very typical Yas character. I definitely side with AoD on this title, and look forward to further volumes. Granted I didn't bother to watch the English track, but I find that all of the various plot threads work really well together. It once again reminds me of Yas' masterpieces like Giant Gorg, Venus Wars, or Arion.

Well, I put a couple coupons on it and got it cheap. It was ok. The dub was annoying, and the music was way overdone. Key's right, it had a hard time figuring out what it wanted to do. I think it was trying to be Blue Sub No. 6 for the Fullmetal Alchemist crowd, which strikes me as a reasonable goal. But I was into it by the end of the volume, at least enough that I didn't feel ripped off. It could still go either way.
