I myself am often guilty of quoting the last post in the thread (which means my post sits directly below the one I quoted), so this is a timely reminder to everyone, regulars and newcomers alike. I'll be more careful in the future.

I especially dislike the posts that include a wall-of-quoted-text followed by a one-line snide remark. I see that too often here as well.

I came here to ask if excessive quoting should be reported. Now I do not need to ask.
I know that there is an actual rule against it but I still was not sure if it is considered to be serious enough to justify having a moderator spend time on it. Apparently it is, so I will report any egregious examples. There seems to be a lot of it in the latest Talkback thread for "The List." But after looking at it again I think that most of it might be coming from two people who keep replying to each other and over-quoting each time. I reported three of those posts from yesterday. |

It's not a big deal if it isn't reported. Personally, I just see them as more of an eyesore than anything else. If I run into said instances, I will delete said posts on the spot. Depending on my mood, I might even be nice and fix it. But I'm usually not, so tough tits for the user.
If you feel like reporting it, go ahead, and I'll do what I can. To me, "excessive" is any post with more than 3 quotes in it, such as:
A post with too much quoted from another single post isn't so bad, depending on the amount quoted and the length of the reply. Like this:
I would call okay. But this:

This degree of quoting is definitely not what we're talking about when we raise concerns about excessive quoting. |

As of today, repeat offenders of over-quoting will be placed on Moderation.

^ I don't think quoting one person is the problem. The key word is "excessive." I don't think it is a huge deal but it is kind of annoying to see a huge wall of people quoting someone who is quoting someone else ad infinitum.
