Who'd be stupid enough to pay that kind of money for movies you can rent?

So that guy was selling his DVDs for $3.72 each? I can imagine that people would buy it from him at those prices.

Just look at how much money the fandom is willing to spend for Dragon Ball.

Patlabor is also getting the "dragon box" treatment.

They have that set at Mitsuwa & I always wonder when I walk past who's going to buy it when they can get domestic(Funi) so much cheaper. They also had some scouters.

I really think the anime market in Japan needs to start re-thinking thier ways. They can't keep charging an arm & a leg just because they always have-like Bandai thinking Americans should pay Japanese prices. I picked up Demon Prince Enma because at 100 minutes for 2 eps it's about the same as our stuff & I love a good horror title(it is) plus it's Go Nagai & I only paid $25 per dvd, but I can see the balking over Galexy Angel. And with the internet, Japanese fans have to be seeing how cheap other places are getting this stuff for. The anime studios are getting bucks from overseas now. They really need to cut their own peole some slack. Who knows? If the dvds were cheaper, more than just the die-hard fans would buy them.

I've been noticing that too. There's something like 3 or 4 articles about bootleggers this month alone.

First and foremost, let me point out that bootlegging of DragonBall is a horrendous crime that should be punishable by some combination of death and more death, perhaps with a bit of public humiliation in there along the way. Or something like that Smile.

*raises hand* I'll bite.

Let's assume the average cost of a FUNimation DB & DBZ movie DVD is $20 (you could get them for around that when they came out... sometimes cheaper... and now you get can get some boxsets... going with the round figure of $20 isn't too outlandish).

That's four DB movies (3 + 10th anniversary), and 13 DBZ movies. Comes to $340.

I paid ~$350 for "DRAGON BOX: THE MOVIES" (pre-ordered on Amazon Japan). It came with remastered (progressive) video, an amazing 64-page book with interviews, character designs, and more. It also came with two scouters (that are, in actuality, fully-functional walkie talkies).

I'd say that's a pretty damn good deal.

If you want to take it to current prices on FUNimation's releases of the movies, here's the Amazon price break-down:

DB Movies 2-4: $26.99
DBZ Movies 1-3: $19.99
DBZ Movies 4-6: (unavailable)
DBZ Movie 7: $17.99
DBZ Movies 8, 10-11: $19.99
DBZ Movie 9: $14.99
DBZ Movie 12: $16.99
DBZ Movie 13: $15.99

That takes you to $132.93. The movies 4-6 boxset isn't available on either Amazon or RightStuf, but it's a whopping $49.98 on Z-Store. DB Movie 1 isn't properly released in this country; it's only available edited, dubbed-only as a part of the original KidMark "The Saga Of Goku" boxset release (DB TV 1-13 + Movie 1). Basically, you've got yourself in a little conundrum, at this point, if you haven't been keeping up with them as they've come out... and if you did that, you paid more than you would pay right now. Tied in with that is the point that if you WERE keeping up with the releases as they came out, you re-bought DBZ movie 1 twice (1997 FUNi/Pioneer, 2005 FUNi, 2006 FUNi re-release w/ re-dubs of 1, 2, & 3), and you re-bought DB movies 3 & 4 (DB movie 2 only came in the three-movie boxset). The only argument that really comes into play is the lack-of-subtitles... but if you're buying this set, you're the type of DBZ fan that doesn't really need the subs, anyway Very Happy.

Long story short, yes, I totally agree that the Japanese DVD business model is typically pretty outlandish (especially to the general American otaku), but this JP boxset was certainly a pretty awesome deal, and it doesn't surprise me that some scumbag was trying to profit off of bootlegging it. Once the first DBZ Dragon Box saw its release, it was all downhill from there... those stupid blue-box bootlegs were everywhere.

The irony of an ad for FUNimation's "remastered" boxset(s) above my typing of this forum reply is hurting my very soul.

Man,I am really getting tired of these bootlegging news stories on ANN. If bootleggers take those dollars sign out of their eyes. They would know that your chances of getting away with piracy is really minimal.

While piracy is wrong, most pirates seem to get away with it. The those that don't are pretty screwed though.

BTW, if you want to record something in a theater there, you have until August
before it's illegal. Cool
