I can just hear DJ Milky rushing to get his nom for Princess Ai in first.

PLEASE let this award process cull the good from the crap.

Seconded! Although I suspect that if it doesn't anime fans just won't pay attention to it (or else it'll give us lots to argue about!).

Well, manga industry professionals, including mangaka and publishers/editors, will call these foreign-made manga "manga," but Japanese fans still might not be keen on the idea. I am of the opinion that if the Japanese mangaka think OEL and OGM are manga (regardless of whether they are "good" or not, because many are undeniably sub-par), then that should be the established opinion.

But yes, no DJ Milky, please. At any rate, the winners of this award are most likely to be Koreans and Chinese, then other East and Southeast Asians, then maybe Europeans (French and German). They've got the best, most mangalike, in that order. OEL is really unlikely to win anything at this point.

Doesn't Taro "I'm A Flaming Racist" Asshat have anything better to do with his time, like rattle his saber and scream Nippon Banzai at anyone who's dumb enough to stand within 20 feet of him?

This man is about as qualified to create a "manga award" as DJ Milky is to create a "manga."

Probably not. I'm more than a little disturbed by the LDPs recent obsession with catering to the "otaku vote."

I read about this over at Foxnews and it gave me a chuckle.

I think it's fine to recognize the influence of manga in the world. I love this paragraph though:

'Tokyopop, which will release around 500 titles this year with stories that deal with everything from flesh-eating lesbian vampires to angsty teen romance, is counting on its brand of American manga to be in the running for the new "Nobel" from manga's "spiritual homeland."'

It's about time that flesh-eating lesbian vampires and their contribution to world culture was recognized. Wink

Banzai flesh-eating lesbian vampires!
Banzai...(choke) Crying or Very sad

Let us pray TOKYOPOP doesn't even get a foot into the door. Most of their selections are utter crap. If it isn't artwork, it's poor storytelling.

I mean, who thought Divalicious was worth explo....erm, I mean licensing?

Would otaku actually be important? I would assume he's just catering to the mainstream population. I would have to agree that Taro Aso is a crazy guy.

Rozen Aso is funny. He says some weird stuff. I imagine that Tokyo Pop CEO/DJ Milky is doing backflips at the thought of their OEL crap winning a "manga" award. I can only hope that like Western GN like marvel and DC stuff gets considered so that Tokyoslop crap doesn't win.

It would also be neat if something "yon koma" like Dilbert could win. Interestingly, Aso's reading of Rozen Maiden is an unconfirmed rumour according to this wikipedia comment.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Taro_Aso

That would explain why he's a raging racist. Saying DESU alot would warp his mind.

That's why those kinds of artists would never make it in Japan. Japanese editors are pretty strict about choosing which manga they're going to publish.
