I like how they tried to make the music sound very close to ghibli's.
I actually appreciate Joe Hisaishi's music just as much as, if not more, Miyazaki's work. I was waiting for a Laputa reference. But this is nice. |

As a birthday present, this is just the coolest thing I've seen all day. Well done, Simpsons. You guys are awesome.
As for references: Beginning of illusion in which the town is transformed to the architecture of the bathhouse in Spirited Away, as with the movie The black spirits are a reference to the wandering souls of Spirited Away Masked figure is No-Face of Spirited Away with a Noh mask on. Otto is the Catbus of My Neighbor Totoro Ralph is Ponyo and Chief Wiggum is Porco Rosso The Krusty Burger, with the imagery of animal cruelty, represents Iron Town from Princess Mononoke Krusty is Jiko-bo from Princess Mononoke Smithers and Mayor Quimby both resemble demigod designs from Spirited Away Again, No-Face from Spirited Away Patty and Selma are dressed as and utilizing a broom like Kiki from Kiki's Delivery Service Snowball II is Jiji from Kiki's Delivery Service Principal Skinner is a reference to Tombo's obsession with flight in Kiki's Delivery Service (not sure about this one) The giant baby is a reference to Boh from Spirited Away Moe is Turnip Head from Howl's Moving Castle The three blue spirits in the bush, which include Nelson, are the Kodama in Princess Mononoke The three bullies are Haku from Spirited Away, though done in the style of Western dragons The Kwik-E-Mart is Howl's Moving Castle Apu has no reference, but is dressed in a formal yukata and happi. This is interesting because the happi is the traditional garb of food vendors during festivals. The song playing in the background is a pastiche of Joe Hisaishi, and is closely related to the composition "The Sixth Station" from Spirited Away. However, this can also attributed to Howl's Moving Castle As for Homer's companion, there is no reference. The character will appear on a January 12th episode, in which Comic Book Guy falls in love with a mangaka. Said character will be voiced by science fiction great Harlan Ellison. |

This is no contest -- the Simpsons hasn't been good since the last millennium. |

It would have been nice to get in the last couple (miyazaki directed) movies referenced. Maybe make Lard Lad Donuts sign or the town statue into a Laputa robot... or Holy warrior.... or one of each.
...have Blinky the fish show up as an Ohm... I haven't seen The Wind Rises yet... Is Skinner possibly a reference from that? Slate did an annotated video... and they make no mention of it... or the smoke animals http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2014/01/09/simpsons_miyazaki_tribute_anime_episode_says_goodbye_to_hayao_miyazaki_watch.html |

Grew up watching the Simpsons since it aired in '89 and still a fan, although I haven't watched much of the current/more recent seasons. I thought this was a sweet little tribute.

Hisaishi's music is certainly a very important component that helped to make Miyazaki's films great. Though I noticed that I did not like the music he made for other movies as much as the Ghibli's soundtracks. |

Well, at least they didn't mock anime the way Family Guy has done...

Actually Harlan Ellison is doing a cameo as himself, not voicing the Japanese guy. You can see a behind the scenes video here There's live footage of both Stan Lee and Ellison in the video talking about their parts. Side Note: It's really weird seeing Harlan Ellison has turn into little old man |

With Simpsons, it's....sort of hard to tell-- They're still stuck in the 90's, where anime was something "weird" to make fun of, as it's all foreign, 'n stuff. (As we were just coming off the dismissive demonizing of anything Japanese at the end of the 80's.) With the usual Groening smugness about "Hey, we KNOW this pop-culture reference, do you?", without really satirizing it in any particular direction. One of the reasons we got the "Mister Sparkle" satire of Japanese commercials was the headline at the time that the Simpsons was initially a failure when exported to Japan, as they already had plenty of domestic anime, and didn't know what to make of it-- As this was around the same time that the series was picking fourth-grade schoolyard fights with Mad Magazine, the Internet, and anyone else who dared accuse the show of Not Being Funny Anymore, we had a surfeit of poking Japanese-themed Simpsons episodes after that, all seeming to state Groening's theme of "Oh, I'm sorry our little show isn't up to your HIGH BROADCAST STANDARDS of pop-culture... " |
