The Japanese BD release only had two discs for the OVA episodes. It didn't have the extras here though. |

Sounds like a third disc would be worth it, but I doubt it's gonna stretch beyond $130k judging by the rate it's gone.

They do kickstarters for this type of shit too?
Maybe they should do one for Medaka Box, lol. |

Maybe it's the wording but this article isn't completely accurate. The 3rd disc itself is not a stretch goal. Robert is only offering to pay for part of the costs as stretch goals, there is currently enough in the premium budget at this time to pay for the costs of the 3rd disc, quoted at $6000-8000 in a previous update.
Robert is offering to pay the mastering and authoring costs to allow for more of the premium budget to be spent on other things like extras and packaging. Robert has also stated that for the HD transfer of AD Police Files to be included the Kickstarter would have to hit over $200,000. It's looking like at this point that isn't going to happen. A new dub for Crisis likely isn't going to happen either. The general consensus is doing a separate Kickstarter campaign for AD Police Files, Bubblegum Crash (if the license issues can be resolved), and Scramble Wars as a set would be a better idea. |

Having seen AD Police, it's a mystery to me why anyone would want it included.

I for one didn't enjoy it, but I could see how it might appeal to others. That being said, obviously I'd much rather be seeing actual BGC-related content for stretch goals (and worthwhile ones, like on-disc extras, ideally Japanese interviews and commentaries and the like), than have ADP tacked on. Hell, as bad as Crash was, I'd even choose that as the lesser of two evils, as it was at the very least a very misguided attempt to bring the plot closure. I hear Crash is off the table due to licensing issues though, thankfully. |

You have no idea how much money goes into Blu ray... I really don't, either, but a lot of the money gets spent on encryption and making sure pirates can't get off with perfect digital copies of every Blu ray that hits market! Again, quoting someone else, "There has been more spent to digitally protect Blu ray than has actually been stolen (HD, Blu ray-wise)!" The whole digital rights debate is why Blu ray isn't supported well in the PC community. It's a hassle to directly support the technology and there are constant firmware revisions to keep the security of the format. It means you have to update frequently whether you own a PS3 or addon drive for your PC or Mac... IF you don't do those updates, that means the latest store-bought Blu rays won't work on your system some time down the road! The encryption codes/keys for the systems and future discs constantly get revised in an attempt to keep ahead of the pirates. The expense of mastering for Blu ray and the little payback that's earned from it is why many smaller companies won't bother with the format. For a lot of TV-produced animation, Blu ray IS overkill and doesn't enhance the image much if at all... For instance, all that Hanna Barbera animation was produced simply and with minimal colors and details for the most part that aren't enhanced by HD. HD really only helps feature animation which generally has several orders of magnitude more detail to it than what you see on TV-produced stuff. As much as I like some TV series, Blu ray editions of stuff like Batman:TAS just aren't that necessary and doesn't really help the picture much. That would be likewise for the Batman animated features which were produced on slim budgets. Mask of the Phantasm won't look terribly much better on BD. That was pretty much an extended TV episode done with the TV designs and one of the animation studios involved with the TV series. BD helps out the bigger-budget, more fully animated theatrical stuff like Disny and Ghibli a lot more. TV animation and lower-budget features are pretty much limited animation... Unless you have a lot of color and detail like newer TV shows produced from Japan do, BD won't do much for them. BD is sort of overkill for a lot of classics like Macross let alone original Gundam and things like the original Lupin III TV series and original Cutey Honey. |

Leon, who's a big supporting character in BGC, has his earliest stories told in AD Police. IF you like Leon and the ADP stories, then AD Police is definitely a worthwhile addition. I want BGC more, yes, but ADP shouldn't be knocked hard, either. The original BGC and ADP OVA series are far superior to the later-1990s remakes of those series. What they did to the Knight Saber characters in the BGC TV series is travesty and borderline heresy! I cannot emphasize how much better the original OVAs were! They were not only written better but in general looked nicer than the remakes, too! As bad as the BGC TV series was, what I saw of the ADP TV series had trainwreck written all over it... There's definitely some very good stuff in the ADP OVA series, though. |

Have you ever actually seen any cel-animated works on Blu-ray that were sourced from a good quality film master? These shows in fact have more detail than any digital animation made at sub 480p resolution in late 90-mid 2000s. Digital animation started to improve only after 2008 or so. I have a copy of Macross: Do You Remember Love? on Blu-ray and it looks far better than it was possible to do on DVD. |

@GeorgeC You're kidding, right? MOTP was more than just an extended episode, unlike most anime films. It felt like an actual movie. Not to mention, the character designs are more detailed and the visuals are significantly better. It also has snippets of CG here and there.
Not to mention, many of the direct to video DC animated films are shot in HD and a lot of them look amazing. The Dark Knight Returns in particular has really great visuals, so Blu-Ray is a must for that. Even the early digitally colored Batman Beyond Return of the Joker is on BD and it looks great. BTW, Mask of the Phantasm was produced on a $6 million budget. Absolutely nothing for Warner Bros/DC, but would require several production committees for an anime production, even at this current day. |

Of course, the old film stock looks better on BD than upscaled digital animation.... I'm aware of that. That said, BD is still overkill for many shows unless you're willing to go through and scrub every single frame to death. DVNR is taboo around many video forums and for good reason... It just doesn't get done very well and more than a few Blu ray releases -- including live-action -- has been ruined by overuse of digital clean-up tools. As far as Macross: DYRL goes, there are problems with the Blu ray that start with the inexplicable edits done to a 30-year-old film -- WHY, after 30 years is Kawamori bugged by some scenes; why did he "do a Lucas" on Macross and anime fans? -- and continue from the past HD remaster for the second DVD release that had issues with "specks on the film" that are clearly NOT part of the animation. There should have been a general release that had NOTHING to do with the PS3, wasn't a game tie-in, and left the film in the same edition that was released in the laserdisc boxset over 20 years. Only masochists love edits done to 20-year-old films! I would love to have it on Blu ray, too, but not an imperfect edited copy or bundle with a bad videogame. It's downright embarrassing that that the last good Macross game was the PS2 Macross game! That's been over half a decade now. Shame they were never able to do the movie justice on Blu ray or get a decent game out on the last generation of consoles. |

I think you're looking at the film through rose-colored glasses. I'm my favorite Batman film, too, but it's not much better quality-wise than the majority of TV episodes to be frank. They're the same designs, same directors the TV series had. None of the DC films are feature-quality animation. They were produced under tight budgets and it shows in places. They're still remarkably well-done for the money. I laughed when Batman: Return of the Joker was released and Bruce Timm declared it "feature-quality" animation... Awful lots of obvious holds there and many, many instances of dodgy animation. (There was a lot of that in the flashback sequence where Robin was kidnapped by the Joker.) No, the Disney feature animation of past years (before they ditched traditional for CG) and the bulk of Ghibli's feature animation is a lot better than the DC stuff. Thank goodness films don't just get judged by looks! As pretty as most Disney stuff is, I can't stand the repetition of storylines and the mentality through much of the 1990s that material had to be adaptable for Broadway! Pixar isn't any better nowadays, either, with the emphasis on buddy films and sequels to everything INCLUDING their bad films!... If you want variety, you look at overseas animation, for sure! No question they do a lot of the same crap that gets done in North American animation (toy marketing, shows copying basic themes -- a million magic girl shows one year, a million robot shows the next year --, etc.) but at least there's more variety in subject matter and it's not all superheroes, buddy movies, or princess movies... |

In my opinion AD Police Files OVA absolutly blows away BGC,ADP ova were shorter, more 'to the point' & this Noirceur typical to the cyberpunk genre coupled to 80s music, man those were low budget stuff but a considerable amount of passion were put into them. AD Police TV serie was "crap".But ADPolice Files & Parasite Dolls(2003) undoutly Shreds Bubblegum "WHOOT the knight sabers are savin da day!!" Crisis. Credit needs to be given where it's due. I feel most BGC fans sadly overlook Parasite Dolls and AD Police Files. Just my rant! or my 2 cents |

GeorgeC: It's fairly obvious why Kawamori "retconned" DYRL. There are a lot more Japanese female fans of Macross, nowadays, because of Frontier and 7, so he didn't want to gross them out. That's all there is to it.
