Just wondering. Is it always the case that if you watch anime, you have to read manga too?
I have to admit that I watch way more anime than I read manga. I always thought that anime is much more within my reach, we have a lot of local channels that show anime everyday. On the other hand, I don't see a lot of manga in my country, and when I do, I find them a bit expensive, so I only have a few on hand. (I don't want to download scans). Furthermore, I think it's way easier to watch anime than to read manga. So do all of you guys who watch anime read manga too? Do you watch more anime than read manga or vice versa? Or are you like me who does not read manga at all ? The reason for this post is that I can't help but feel a bit ignorant. Is there a reason for me to feel this way (I know this last line seemed a bit weird  )?

I tend not to so far. I did with Death Note but thats because I was watching the show and wanted to know what would happen next and just bought up the anime. Other than that, if I have to pay for the manga rather than borrow it or something (I'm reading FMA and Hellsing because my school library has them in stock) I'll just pass on it despite the ultimately unimportant changes and differences and whatnot.

It sure isn't true for me. I've read a couple of manga, but they were borrowed from someone else; I've never actually bought one. I can't say I was overwhelmed by them.
Although a taste for manga and a taste for anime often cross over, one isn't a given for the other. |

If its a title I really LOVED, and then I see the manga on the shelf, I usually pick it up. But if it was just a "meh" title, and then I see the manga on the shelf, Ill pass by it. It just depends on how much I loved the show.

I'll admit that I've seen maybe 500 times the amount of anime then I've read manga. So I don't think it always must be so.

I do read the manga after seeing the anime for three reasons: 1) if the manga proceeds further than the anime, and I really like the anime. 2) if the manga has a different ending the anime, and I want to see how it ends. 3) if I really really liked the anime, and I just want to enjoy the graphic novel form, since the art is usually better in graphic novels. I also sometimes pick up a manga and then want to watch the anime (if there is one).
Currently I'm reading Bleach (which is almost caught up the anime, especially since it doesn't have that stupid Bounto arc), Naruto (but haven't gotten around to the anime yet, because I started reading before the anime was released in the US), Fruits Basket (since the anime only got to about volume 6 or so), Hana Kimi (which has no anime), and Ouran High School (which the anime got to vol. 8, and the manga is still being written). I'm also reading the 12 Kingdoms novels, since that anime remains unfinished, and I want to know what happened to certain characters. |

Glad to see I'm not alone, and I agree with what most of you said. I do want to find the manga version of Maria-sama ga miteru and other series that I liked.

It is not something you absolutely have to do, but we get people on here that ask about where to continue the storyline of an anime in the manga. The manga is not going to be 100% accurate to the anime, and vice-versa. If you want to get the full story (on both fronts) then I suggest that manga reading is in order. If you're satisfied with what happened in the anime, I see no reason to go back and read the manga then.

As to whether or not I read the manga when I watch the anime, it really depends on the anime and manga. For the most part, it depends on how much I like the anime. If I really like it I'll check out the manga. Sometimes the anime and manga are of equal quality (One Piece, Bleach), sometimes the anime is much better than the manga (Sailor Moon, Utena), and sometimes the manga is better than the anime - usually because the manga continues on after the anime show was canceled (berserk, fruits basket). As for Maria-Sama, I think the original source material isn't manga but rather "light novels" - novels with illustrations typically aimed at teens. |

It's all just personal preference. You don't have to read manga just because you watch anime and you don't have to watch anime just becase you read manga. As for me, I read manga and watch anime and enjoy both equally.

Sorry I must have missed this before. What do you mean by "different ending"? do you mean a totally different ending, or do you mean a different ending because the anime reached only up to a certain chapter of the manga and the anime was discontinued after that? Forgive my lack of manga understanding

Both scenarios can occur. There have been a few instances where the anime adaptation went for a completely different ending because it caught up with the original source material and was forced to come up with its own conclusion. I believe Full Metal Alchemist, Rurouni Kenshin, and Mahou Sensei Negima all went for a completely different ending (correct me if I'm wrong, my memory's not too good on those series).
Anyway, I tend not to read manga at all. If I want to read something, it's likely going to be a novel...still pictures kinda bore me, lol. |

You're right on FMA (thats the reason I'm reading it now) and Kenshin. Zac has mentioned how retarded that anime gets since they caught up to the manga and had to make their own plots about him fighting German people with tin ears or something.
No clue about Negima though. I think Ken Akamatsu bitched about the original series though saying it was a disgrace to his series or something. Sounded pretty terrible. There are a bunch of Negmia anime though aren't there? |

Both. For example, Cardcaptor Sakura ended differently, and I actually like the manga ending better (I didn't care for the 2nd movie that much, which was the real ending of the anime). And I loved the Fruits Basket anime, but was vaguely dissatisfied with the open ending, so I picked up the manga when I found out the manga extended way past the anime. |
