I'm noticing with some of the anime I've been getting in shipments from ADV has ratings that appear to be different than how they did it originally. All of their titles they would have as 17+ seem to have re-rated as TV-MA with VSL under it. Their other titles that have the 12+ or the 15+ seem to be unchanged in that system. Has anybody else noticed this. Titles I've noticed with the TV-MA ratings: Excel Saga, Gantz, Elfen Lied, Samurai Gun, Shuten Doji, just to name a few.

I've noticed this too. In the original DVD release of Evangelion, the rating was 12+, now on the Platinum edition, the rating's 15+. They've probably changed the ratings because they don't want anyone underage to watch something like Excel Saga which has(extreme sexual content)?

They've been doing this for quite a while now, within the last year or so I believe. I'm not completely sure about this, but my guess is the reason for the switch was that they (ADV) wanted to comply with the MPAA ratings system so they can broadcast their shows either on their own network (The Anime Network) or another outlet. FUNimation has been doing the same thing. The other companies (Geneon, Bandai, etc.) still use the old rating system on their DVD packaging.

With the exception of the last episode, I dont see excel saga's TV 16/MA rating.

There were plenty of times when the show was out of hand, and it's been deserving of it's rating. Plenty of blood, sexual references and bad language to the show getting a TV-MA. Nothing new. Though I have to admit that the last episode was in the extreme over all the other ones. |

Lol, there was the doc with the Loli complex, I'll give you that. But the innuendo was either deeply hidden under all word play that I didn't notice it, or I'm just so jaded to just not really care. Or maybe it's been a while since I've seen it. |

Wasn't Evangelion platinum re-rated because of the new dialogue and "uncut" presentation? I picked up Gantz and Elfen Lied during their INITIAL R1 releases and I remember those being TV-MA from the start, and for a damn good reason.
I'm pretty sure a lot of standards have changed since Excel Saga's INITIAL releases.... I don't think I quite understand the point to the INITIAL post.... Initial D.... Sorry, couldn't help it with this skin. |

There is no direct connection between the US TV Parental Guidelines system and the MPAA to my knowledge. MPAA ratings still come in the same form as before (G, PG, PG-13, R, NC). You can read all about the TV rating systems of various countries here... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television_rating_system The best logo so far has to be this one from the Netherlands: Maybe hentai4me will choose this as his next avatar. |
