I am, as may be apparent from my avatar and previous posts on the series, a huge fan of both Mai HiME and Mai Otome (and of the intruiging links between them that remain mostly only implied or hinted at in the shows themselves). Therefore I have been excitedly anticipating and watching the Mai Otome OVA, Mai Otome Zwei.
It's going to be a four-episode OVA and they are releasing one episode every three months, which is pretty annoying to those of us dying to know what happens, but as the second episode just arrived this weekend, I wanted to share my thoughts on what I think may be coming which has me very excited!
Overall, I honestly don't think the actual execution of the OVA has been that great: for something that is only two hours long total, there seems to be a lot of goofing around and pointless comedy scenes, especially in this second episode (which only had about 5 minutes of plot out of a 25 minute episode.. not too great for a 4-episode OVA if you ask me). However, the plot that there is seems to be moving in a direction which makes me very excited.
Almost a year ago, when Mai Otome finished its Japanese run, I posted a long post stating my theories regarding the connections between the world of Mai HiME and that of Mai Otome. Some of them were proven facts (Mai Otome takes place several hundred years in the future of Mai HiME but in the same universe), others were conjecture based upon evidence (certain characters in Otome being 'the same' as those from HiME in more than just looks, etc.)
What I think we are seeing in Mai Otome Zwei is a much more blatent linking of the two series in the form of the return of some force connected to the Obsidian Lord, perhaps Miroku himself.
At the beginning of the first episode a meteor is heading towards the planet, which the Otome stop by blowing it into smithereens in orbit. Pieces of the meteor still rain down on the planet, and from one such piece emerges a shapeless black being. This being proceeds to rampage across the planet, freezing Otome with a beam that effectively turns them to stone. When it does this, it absorbs characteristics of the Otome, physically or in its abilities. In the second episode they reveal that what it is doing is locking up the Otome's nano-machines (the source of their power), and we can assume, stealing the data from those nano-machines to assume portions of the Otome's powers.
What leads me to believe that this being is linked to the Obsidian Lord and his brother Miroku (principle evil deities from Mai HiME) is the repeated assertion by characters who would be 'in the know' that "he has returned". Although they do not name this returnee, they are reffering to the meteor creature. Nagi says something to this effect in episode 2, claiming he read it in a book (although my theory that he is the same Nagi from Mai HiME would mean he knows it from experience), and I believe Mikoto (another character I believe is a HiME survivor) said something similar in episode 1 shortly before she vanished along with Mai, Mashiro, and the Black Valley under the creature's assault. Furthermore, the minions that this creature summons to fight the Otome bear some striking resemblences to Childs from HiME: one thing in particular I noticed was that the sword-armed monster from episode 02 had arms which appeared remarkably similar to the Sword of Miroku. Also, Sara Gallager, one of the Five Columns, reacts when she sees this monster by saying it is a "Child". This is significant because in Mai Otome, mechanical monsters controlled by people are called "Slaves", not "Childs"(And yes, in this mythos apparently the plural of Child is Childs).. "Child" is what they are called in Mai HiME.
If we delve even further, the ability of this black energy being to absorb the powers of the Otome might be evidence that it is linked to the Obsidian Lord. My prior post presented evidence that Otome were basically artificial HiME created by the Searrs Foundation, using the real HiME as a basis. If this is true, Otome technology may be similar enough to HiME powers that Miroku (the brother of the Obsidian Lord who oversaw the HiME Carnival) can effect them in this manner.
As for why the creature appeared: I think we can trace that to the explosion of the Harmonium's power at the end of Mai Otome. As you may recall, when Nina was infused with it's power, she gained a weapon which appeared to be a modified Sword of Miroku, indicating that the Harmonium (which I believe was also created by the Searrs foundation based on the HiME technology) may have had some linkto the power of the Obsidian Lord and Miroku.Thee use of this power in battle in orbit may therefore have been the trigger which summoned this black beast back to the planet. THat's my theory anyway.
Anyway, that's my thinking. We still have two more episodes of the OVA to go, the last of which will not be out until August, so it will be a while to see if my predictions are in the ballpark or completely off base! I'm excited, either way!
