Kiddy Grade is the only series I've watched where I've had to change it to dubs to understand it. I didn't understand the plot in the first few episodes at all, then I realized that not only were the subs super fast - but the dialogue, names and stories are fairly complex for such short episodes. I was very sad to change it to the poor dubs since I paid $112 for the box set. Anybody else have this problem with Kiddy Grade or any other series in particular? Akira has been the only other anime which I've had to watch in dubs to fully understand it.

You'll get some strong disagreement here on it being a "poor dub." (Or do you just dislike dubs in general?) I've always thought that one was very solid, aside from it playing a bit too loose with its translation at times.
And part of the trouble you're having is that very little of the actual plot shows up in the first few episodes. The real story doesn't start becoming apparent until episode 9, with the first few episodes mostly just setting the stage, introducing the characters, and having a bit of fun. |

the japanese just talk realy fast
when i first stared to watch my anime's in Japanese. i had to pause it all the time coz it was just going to fast. but you'll learn how to read faster in time
i had no prob. with the diffrent names of the planets enz. so its just you mate ^^ (and Key, all dub's suck.. (Especaly when they're dubble dubed like we have in the netherlands .. )) |

I personally never had problems reading subtitles, you see I read abnormally fast according to some people, but has for the complex names, I have a lot of difficulties remembering them (Ex: The Twelve Kingdoms, it took me some time to remember all the vocabulary).
I know the post wasn't addressed to me but... all dubs sucks? I don't think so. |

Subtitles can be poorly applied just like a bad dub. A properly executed subtitle stream might leave out some of the extraneous bits but should include accurate translations for all the important details spaced and timed appropriately for quick reading and easy comprehension.
Subtitles are generally better than dubs in my view, but that doesn't mean they don't have their own set of common flaws. There have only been a handful of subs and dubs where I could find no obvious defect anywhere in the entire series. Even English movies that are subtitled in English by native English speakers typically receive sub-par subtitles. Slight changes in timing and word selection can have a disastrous impact on the flow and meaning of the dialog. As for the Japanese speaking faster than English speakers, well, they do get to leave out some of the implied context that English generally requires to be spelled out in every sentence. |

Well I can never keep up with Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, or Twelve Kingdoms subtitled. Way too much conversation to catch everything. I have this problem in my college's anime club mostly where most everyone wants subbed and I have no pause button I couldn't really care less which I watch as I'm fast enough to keep up with most shows but not those two.
Also Funimation does some of the best dubs ever, and in addition just to let you know, you got totally ripped off if you paid that much for the set. I also had trouble on Twelve Kingdoms, but I've never really had problems with subbed G.I.T.S. S.A.C., but I do love my Ghost and so I probably made myself get better just for the show.
The only real problem with subs, beside just horrible tranlation, misspelled words and just some untranslated words, are shows like Pani Poni Dash!. People are going crazy, with all the "stats" on the screen, the message board, the chalk board, the radio and TV, a singing robot in the background and background characters all going at once, and they subbed it all, that was tiring just to pause it every 5 sec. to get it all. |

Funimation's English Kiddy Grade is indeed one of the better dubs. They did a superb job in the English versions of the theme songs. This is coming from someone who understands Japanese and rarely watches dubs. Of course the fact that it doesn't take place in Japan is a real plus since I have trouble watching a series taking place in Japan in English, especially if it's a period piece. I've watched both Twelve Kingdoms and SAC twice through since they were so amazing. These series do make more sense on a second viewing. I'm not as big of a fan of Kiddy Grade, but might sit trhough the English version the next time I watch the series.

Well I've made quite alot of progress on the series now and I see what you mean. I'm pretty impressed with the dubbing even though it's one of the only series i've ever watched dubbed. I'm nearing the end of the series now and I haven't tried watching the subtitles again. I'm not sure why I couldn't follow the text and I'm surprised that nobody else noticed this.. I've never had any problems before with subtitles whether it be anime or foreign films in general. I suppose Kiddy Grade moves so fast and I haven't watched an action-packed-space-agent-kick-butt series in ages. |

I don't remember having any problems with the subtitles and, beside a couple of places where I strongly disagreed with the script, I had no problem with the sub and, since this is a series where I was intimately familiar with the Japanese track since I already owned the R2s, the dub had to work twice as hard since it not only had to work on it's own merits but also against familiarity.
