In my immediate family, my kids love that I watch anime, as they get to reap the rewards. My wife doesn't have much of an opinion, as long as my spending doesn't get too crazy. My father is a movie buff & appreciates good animation, so I've purchased several anime films for him as gifts (Cowboy Bebop movie, Porco Rosso, Beyond the Clouds, GITS, etc). I don't think he's ready yet to sit down & watch a series yet, though I did give him a burned copy of FLCL (he likes left-of-center oddball movies, so I think he'll enjoy it once he gives it a chance).

My family knows I like anime and they don't care if I like it or not but they don't really care about it themselves. I've tried to get my mother to watch Spirited Away but she got bored of it after the 1st 40 minutes. My sister only likes Sailor Moon, Tenchi Muyo, and Kiki's Delivery Service. I've tried to get her to watch some of Miyazaki's other films but I haven't had much luck yet and Sailor Moon is about the only anime she'll willingly watch subbed. I have one cousin who's 11 who likes anime but he mostly only likes the mainstream dubbed anime on Cartoon Network, but he also likes Miyazaki films and GITS and he's recently started reading the Orphen manga. Outside of my family only two of my friends know I like anime and they're both fans themselves. My best friend likes shounen, shoujo, and mecha anime, and I've gotten her hooked on Princess Mononoke and Clamp series. My other friend only likes the Shounen Jump series but he's more of a manga fan than an anime fan. I've told my other friends I like anime and they thought I was a little weird for liking it, but they don't keep on about it and I don't talk about it much expect with my two friends I know who're also anime fans anyway. so it's all good.

I guess for me i keep my anime/manga fandom hidden from everyone. Not because im particularly embarrased or anything, but....imagine being the only person around who is into the same things as you are...im pretty much isolated down here
As for my family...well i tend not to speak with people unless its absolutely necessary(its not because im shy either i just don't want to bother anymore). My mom has a vague idea of what it is and sometimes expresses concerns in the form of, "Those cartoons look very violent, and bad, etc." And my dad well i heard him make a comment along the lines of, "What is that? Chinese cartoons?" *sigh* I do have a few cousins that have a passing interest in anime and sometimes i'll even show them some(purely for shock value hehe )
Sometimes i do think it would be nice to have a group of friends that liked the same things i do, but it doesnt look like it'll happen anytime soon, and i thin it's gotten to the point where i could hardly watch my anime in the same room as someone who's into it as much as i am(for the record any anime i watch is in my room all by my lonesome, can't have those pesky family members and whatnot making their damn stupid comments, this goes for pretty much anyone).
And my friends? Well, i've almost always considered friends simply as the people you're seen with an nothing more. No one knows about my hobby because i keep it that way, and until i find some who likes it too it seems it's going to stay that way.
P.S. sorry that my post was too long....

To youkai_ronin:
I feel your pain brotha!
I kind of had the same dilemma, my friends really weren't into anime and the people who were into anime weren't exactly fond of me. I understand how it is at times to be into such a hobby that no one is really interested in that you're close to. Don't be too sad though. And I also show my cousins anime too but nothing too bad (except showing very little kids Super Gals lol). I also have to watch anime by myself when around relatives I don't see that much because they do poke fun but those are the relatives who are the black sheeps of the family. Most of my family is just fine with me watching anime as long as its not my priority. I have found one friend who is into anime. Not what I'm into but what matters is that she is a friendly person who I feel comfortable discussing my inetrest with and you should search for that too. Maybe your friends wouldn't mind learning about anime if you open up to them.
I'm sorry that you feel so depressed about the matter, I really feel for you but I do hope you find someone who shares your interest. You seem like a good person who people would be open about their anime viewing. Plenty of people on ANN you can private message if you feel they could possibly be a good person to have a conversation with. Don't be so down also when you watch anime alone, its very comfortable and a good stress reliever when you can fully absorb yourself into a good episode

Thanks, that made my day I'm pretty resilient and a solitary person by nature, but.....sometimes i get worn down and i dont know who to talk to because i don't trust, or have enough faith in people. But it's alright since i know there ARE people who share my interests, i might find them someday who knows. Thanks for the pick me up, i do feel a lot better now On that note it's time to watch the rest of my Fullmetal Panic! The Second Raid that i bought today hehe(FEELS A LOT BETTER NOW).

for some reason i am very strangely deep into other people's comment in this thread. i read every single one of them with great interest....
my mom, i can tell is trying to get into anime which is good but failing miserably and makes very idiotic remarks like oh he's bleeding, or why is she crying when its quite obvious. i hope this doesnt make me sound like a mean person.. my dad is too busy to notice and rarely comes to my room but he knows i love anime and respects that which is nice but sometimes makes comments that arent cool at all!
u know whats really awkward when ur watching anime and hear a moan/grunt and everyone who isnt watching thinks im watching inappropriate stuff..... its sooo embaressing haha
my brother is into anime and is the one who first showed me samurai x trust and betrayal which is one of my top favorites as well as half the other anime fans. im quite lucky to have a brother like this one who is into many of the same things as me as well as is very mature and is there for me alot of time.
alot of people know who i am at school but i only have a few friends, everybody else just stares at me in the hall wierdly every single day i try not to look back cause it seems everybody in the hall is actually just directly looking at me eye to eye ..cud be im paranoid but its strange and seriously freaking the living crap outa me. the few friends i talk too dont anime but i have a good friend who does like it very much and we have some good conversations sometimes but he comes over almost every weekend and its starting to get annoying im starting to make up things like im going to a wedding
some douchebags in school make fun of anime fans i hear it quite often which is annoying the hell outa me. they dont make fun of me personally just kids who associate anime with school/ reading mangas in spare time and wearing bookbags.

Ah, the joys of being older and not having to explain your very addictive hobby. Of course, as addictions go, this is expensive but at least it's not illegal.
As for my parents, they know that I have ordered a bunch of DVDs recently...especially since you can't miss the Men/Women in Brown coming to the door. I think that if my mother knew how much I actually spend on anime, she'd have a bit of a fit, claiming she's concerned about what would happen to me in the future financially.
Ah, well...I'm screwed.
I do periodically show my dad some titles, mostly Miyazaki (He LOVED Porco Rosso) but it's just not something they enjoy. I'm hoping that whenever ADV gets finished with Mutineers Moon, they will have done a decent job and I can show it to him, since it's one of his absolute favorite books.

Well, most of my friends dont care for it in public, but Im in the middle of watching a DVD, they will jump in and me into it. They amazed by my collection and they wish they had it. I tell them to grow some "balls" and stop caring what people think of them and start buying some. Then again I do like in a hick state where it some to be taboo to like anything outside the norm. My parents on the other had are really supportive ( for lack of better word). They ask what Im watching, why/if I like it. I also have recieved DVDs a birthday and christmas gifts. But for all I know they could be just asking to try to understand me better. Oh well either way, I am just going to keep watching and theres nothing that will stop me. HAHAHAHAHAHA

Heh. I used to watch Case Closed on Adult Swim with my mom and she actually understood what was hapening. My dad doesn't have anything against anime, he just doesn't like animated shows in general. Sad since 90% of the good shows are animated.

Sounds more like ignorance to me.

Lucky. MY brother doesn't like anime except for Ranma but at least he's not ignorant about it. He knows there's more to anime than Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh!. Besides he said he just doesn't like the art. Maybe if I showed him shows like Hellsing or FMA. Those are good anime.

OMG THEY LIKE ANIMEZ?! LET'Z GIVE THEM A HARD TIME ABOUT IT!!!!111
Sorry about that. Anyway I think it's incredibly stupid how people act about anime. It's nothing to be ashamed of either. I'm an open anime fan and am proud of it. At least my brother's not like those jerks. He'll actually help me with anime stuff when I need it. That's one reason I'm glad to have such an awesome brother who, while is mature(about anime too) is also a kid at times and who I can get along with and look up to. I don't know what I'd do without him.

And he has started even to have a look at my collection which has increased dramatically during this second half of the year. |
That's definetly a possibility on my part, though I was spending money on video games before I got into anime. Fortunately I've gotten my sister to watch the Adventures of the Mini Goddesses, and she has found it to be funny and stupid at the same time. That's good, cause it's better than my mom's reaction.

Whenever my dad sees me watching subbed anime, he doesn't even see the subtitles. Everytime I'm watching it he asks me "Do you even understand what they're saying?"

Wow. It's so nice to know I'm not alone. I also read all the posts and feel deeply for each one who toughs it out for their passion!

LOL I totally agree! It's true anime is a major part of my budget, I think I spend more time explaining to my friends why I'm broke half the time. Or explaining to myself why I need this DVD more than maybe, say lunch this week?

My friends are not into it, but they at least tolerate my obsession. I did recently win over a couple of my close friends with Fullmetal Alchemist and Fruits Basket...I think one or two of my friends have reconsidered when they put aside their skepticism and actually let the stories impact them. It's been about letting them experience the story, once they get over the fact that it's animated.
My mom will read manga to see what it's all about, and my dad has no comments whatsoever. I have been successful in getting them to watch a few Miyazaki movies, by telling them "this director is kinda like a Japanese Disney". That may be watering it down a bit, but it did the trick.

My family has mixed reactions to my anime watching/collecting.
My father thinks its a waste of my time and money, but since it's my money and time, doesn't care - just as long as I keep up with studies. He often accuses me about spending my time with "those cartoons", when in fact, I'm working on the computer on schoolwork. It's annoying, but I can hardly blame him, because when I'm not doing work, I'm spending a lot of time on anime sites.
My mother thinks of anime as being Speed Racer and Voltron, since she grew up watching Speed Racer and remembered how into Voltron I was as a kid. She often sees me watching anime and says, "I just think they all look like Speed Racer." I'm amazed she can even put two and two together when it comes to anime, since modern anime looks nothing like Speed Racer did. I'll often describe some of the shows I'm watching and she at least feigns interest, so she doesn't seem to mind all that much.
My sister doesn't have any attitude towards it, she just thinks its a weird hobby of mine. She once expressed surprise that "cartoons can swear" when she heard Karen Joshua say "shit" in Gundam 08th MS Team, but I reminded her that oftentimes American cartoons (not action ones, but the prime time ones) swear, too.
My cousins on my father's side used to be pretty big into anime. One of them even worked at an anime store at a local mall. They were a huge influence on my budding anime fandom, showing me Serial Experiments Lain at the time I was just watching Dragon Ball Z and Pokemon. They also introduced me to Neon Genesis Evangelion, which was their, and became my, favorite series for a long while. The first time they showed me Cowboy Bebop, I actually IGNORED it, mostly because it was a grainy fansub bootleg tape, out before it was even licensed here. It's currently my favorite anime show of all time. Now, however, they don't really care as much about it. Not nearly as much as I do. But now I show THEM, especially my middle cousin, new anime from time to time.
My cousins on my mother's side aren't into much anime accept a few particular series. I bought a Lain plushie for one of them at Otakon that I have yet to give to her. I bought myself one the previous year and she was jealous because Lain is apparently her favorite anime character.
The rest of my family doesn't really care or I can't gauge their reactions. I mostly try to keep anime to myself, nowadays. I don't make a lot of friends with anime fans, because I'm either not as into anime as they are or too into anime. The friends I do have are either somewhat into anime (at least, enough to go to Otakon) or used to be and not so much anymore.
