The range in most Shonen Jump seems a tad limited to me. I got around to watching the first volume of Bleach hoping it would be different, but sure enough it reminded me of most of the other Jump titles. Out of the dozens of SJ titles that come to mind the only one that doesn't have a male as a main character is Cat's Eye. The only ones with main characters over the age of 18 that come to mind are City Hunter Hokuto no Ken, and Kenshin. I think that the target audience for Shonen Jump is pretty clear. My point is that most Shonen Jump titles remind me of each other so the subject statement applies to me.

The titles covered by Dengeki Daioh or Young King Ours seem to cover a larger range of genres, and have characters that vary a bit more than Jump titles.

Naruto wouldn't even exist. I mean even Kishimoto says that he was influenced by DBZ. Also, some Naruto characters are based of DBZ characters, Naruto/Goku, Sasuke/Vegeta.

Don't forget without DBZ we wouldn't have One Piece as well. I do not see the point of this thread at all. Naruto comes a decade after DBZ, what is there to compare?

I would guess that the main reason people compare Naruto to DBZ is because both are or once were cult favorites with an enormous following. Since this is the case and both of them contain very similar constituent elements, it's not difficult to see why they would be compared so often.

You're contradicting yourself here. Your reasoning behind "I do not see the point of this thread at all" is something almost parallel to the lines of what the thread is asking; people DO often compare Naruto to DBZ, the thread starter is wondering why. Not all threads have to be absolutely perfect or have a concise, clear, obvious point to stay open for discussion.

Okay, my bad. I do not see why people have to compare Naruto to DBZ. I guess my real reason behind that is maybe that I haven't seen Naruto at all.

Well if you ever choose to star it, dont quit before the "Get Sasuke Back" arc, because that was the TRUE highlight of the Naruto anime up till now.

And in case you feel like checking the series, I suggest the you skip those pointless, boring fillers that start by the end of Sasuke retrieval arc and just wait for Kakashi Gaiden and the start of Naruto II.

At least the fillers in DBZ were used to extend the battles and storyline that were presented in the manga and were intersperesd along the series, Naruto on the other hand has over 80 consecutive episodes of this nightmare.

Directly to the OP:

People will make comparisons because the comparisons are there to make and because people like making comparisons. I think Nagisa probably made the best post on the subject.

Also when a series is in a similar genre, it is natural to want to compare it to others in the same genre. Especially if they are similar in popularity, although I think DBZ was worlds ahead at its peak in popularity.

Just because you don't think the comparison is there, doesn't mean there are not many more people who do see them. And honestly, naruto fan 09812, you seem to have a habit of occasionally starting a thread with no real reasonning other than what you believe and after posting expect everyone to see it your way. Just like you have your opinions on things so does everybody else.

For instance, In my opinion, despite that they are strikingly similar, I liked DBZ a lot more than Naruto. I thought it was much more fun and entertaining. I thought the characters were a little richer from being developed in the original DB, and also much more interesting. I also think that even though DBZ is formulaic by nature, it found a way to use this to its own advantage and still managed to keep things fresh, well, for the most part, ok mostly in the earlier arcs, but anyway. I don't know how Naruto does this honestly, since I have only seen 12 episodes and will not watch any more, but in those 12 it never grabbed my attention or imagination the way Goku and company did right from the beginning.

And even though I see it that way, I don't look at Naruto fans and say, "Why do they think that show is any good compared to DBZ?!?! they are wrong!"

I can clearly see that Naruto fans have their own tastes and preferences and have every right to think how they do. Maybe you should give people the benfit of the doubt too, even when they don't see things your way.

[EDIT: Do not excessively quote. -TK]

Well...i agree on skipping most of the filler but there are a few filler episodes that are funny and some are interesting spoiler[like the exploding tags covering the village segment] or the first mission with Kiba, Shino and Hinata (if thats considered filler episodes) which was nice and could be entertaining to watch although dont continue the story...

For one, Nagisa basically handed your ass back to you on a platter.

For two, disregarding the actual animation and whatnot of the show, people compare the two because of their critical responses. Cartoon Network is still eating off their DBZ money from 1998, and Naruto is the same because it's a popular show. My generation (1989+) ate up DBZ and now the new genertaion (2000+) is eating up Naruto. That's not much different from my parents tripping off of Voltron, and then my older brother and myslef tripping off of Transformer years later.

There the same because it's basically a reincarnation of something else for a younger generation. Like me liking Rugrats and little Malik liking Spongebob. We had ours, so now they have theirs. Stop hating.

That is the single most painful statement I have ever read. Voltron was my favorite, and now someone old enough to play on the internet considers it his parents anime...

The only answer to the question has already been given by Nagisa. However, it never really felt like the OP was about that question, but rather that it was a excuse to argue about how great Naruto is.

Let's also not forget that Naruto has the same annoying tendency as DBZ to drag things out, although admittedly DBZ carries it to even greater extremes.

Honestly, I don't see how someone can watch both series and not see the similarities. Yeah, the plotting is a bit more complex in Naruto, but there's just too many other parallels to avoid comparisons.

I'd say Naruto putting a complete and utter block on the story and then airing nothing but mindless crap for 100+ episodes is a whole lot worse than DBZ spreading an actual plot event out by an extra five or ten episodes. Might just be personal preference, but I'd rather watch an overlong Goku/Freezer fight than have to sit through Naruto pissing on random supporting characters, Konohamaru's bad day (part 12), crappy retconned tiger baddies, and the Konoha Olympics all in one long, seemingly unending succession.

I do not see why people compare DBZ with Naruto. The fighting in DBZ is flat out boring while the fighting in Naruto has me at the edge of my seat wondering what will happen next. Also, the music in Naruto do not has me holding my ears in pain. It is bascially a one man show with DBZ while the side characters live their lives thought Goku. The side characters in are more useful in Naruto than DBZ. The reason I stated ealier Naruto one up DBZ in everything It laughable how people compare DBZ with Naruto,DBZ is lucky to be said in the same sentence as Naruto and is not even in the same league or universe as Naruto. I was never a big fan of DBZ sure I would watch a episode if I am really bore and nothing else seem to on but DBZ never has the effect that Naruto has on me.

you are absoulutely right NARUTOi s just as good as DBZ. I don't see the difference. Imean,I used to watch DBZ before school started and I thought it was cool. I also watch NARUTO with my sister. ZShe loves NARUTO. she thinks he's funny. I think that Naruto is just as good as DBZ.
