Just a warning: my question has to do with the series as a whole so there's gonna be major spoilers ahead which I won't bother hiding.

So I finally finished this incredible anime. One major reason is because of the complex characters. Now I'm having trouble understanding spoiler[ what Johan's purpose in life after he finds the book "The Monster with No Name". I've looked at several threads on this board and other sites but couldn't find an answer. There was something about a 'perfect suicide'. What does this mean? Was he trying to emulate the 'Johan' in the book by trying to be the last person in the world? Did he want to die in that barren desert where no one knew his name or who he was? If so then why did he want Dr. Tenma to kill him instead of just killing himself?]

[EDIT: Although the title says there are spoilers, people have been known to click and foolishly read them anyway, so I put tags on just for the heck of it. -TK]

Welcome to the boards and just to let you know if you feel something is going to give something away you can use the Spoiler button to hide text like spoiler[this.]

As to your question, spoiler[why what Johan was doing was refered to, rather ironically, as the "perfect suicide" is because it wasn't really a suicide. He set things up so that someone else would kill him and that by killing off all the people that ever knew him he would effectively erase the fact that he ever existed in the first place.] As for why he wanted Tenma to do it, I don't recall.

To read mouse over the text "Spoiler".

I thought that the spoiler["perfect suicide" meant something like removing yourself completely from existence. Kind of like "If your not remembered then you never existed"(serial experiments Lain) type of thing. So he tried to kill all the people that remembered him]I'm not quite sure though. Its been a while.

Hey there welcome to ANN, let me try to answer your question if I can. spoiler[As to Johan perfect suicide, basically when everyone that you knew you is gone, your alone and it's a perfect suicide because Johan doesn't even have to kill himself, he's allowing Tenma to have that honor. Which is another link between Hitler and Johan, there suicide. As to the barren desert you talk about, I believe that is called landscape at the end of the world, meaning if only two people exist that is all that would remain. It's also could be a manifestion of Johan journey with his sister across the Czech border. Since at the time they were only things that they (Johan and Nina) had were each other, I believe Johan shows this to Tenma so that Tenma understand where he came from.]

spoiler[I think that there the same actually, well sort of. I think Johan ultimate goal is to be killed by Tenma, by way of using the town's people to kill each other and eventually Tenma. ]

Then again I am a bit rusty on my later episode Monster info, since I am only on volume 4 of the manga, I probably should rewatch this series if I ever get the chance.....but on the other hand I really want to read Another Monster.

spoiler[ Well, since Tenma saved his life, I remember earlier on in the series Johan referred to him as a kind of father figure. He held Tenma responsible for bringing him back to life (giving him life - father figure etc. but also held him responsible for not letting him die after he got Nina to shoot him.) There was a kind of bond between Tenma and Johan. Sorry, I should kinda rewatch some chunks to refresh my memory.]

Anyways, I think all the other response about spoiler[the perfect suicide etc. ] are all correct (or at least coherent interpretations.) spoiler[All the monster with no name wanted was to get a name, but once he had finally eaten everyone up and gained a name there was nobody else who could know it. It wasn't so much that Johan had found the book and then come up with the 'plan' - it was that he had been indoctrinated as part of the whole experiment - so it was always his nature to do what he did.]

I hope that made sense and added something to the discussion. It's certainly not a clear cut case.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I think I understand Johan a little better now. But now that I think about it, (spoilers ep: 66) spoiler[ he confuses Nina's memories with his own and murders the couple at such a young age. I'm thinking that he's carrying out his mother's wish (to get revenge against Franz Bonaparta). Is erasing his past to rid himself of his existence just practice so he can then do the same to Bonaparta (i.e. the events that occured at Rudenheim?)]

Sorry if my post seems illogical. I'm burnt out right now. Confused
