Well, christmas is coming up, and I was wondering what some good anime boxed sets are (that aren't too expensive). For instance, one thing I was thinking about was Get Backers season 1, because it's a good show (imo) and because its a fairly big set, and only around $55 on amazon. I was also thinking about season 1 of gantz (i haven't seen the show yet).

Any other suggestions?

thanks in advance

_well it really all depends on two things : what do you already have?
and what are your prefrences in genres?

Gantz is a pretty good selection, if you can handle ultra-violence.
Last Exile is a hit or miss title. Some say that it lacks in the storyline department, I for one think it has a great story. The animation is stellar and quick.
Azumanga Daioh is always a classic if you are looking for a comedy that would be safe to watch with the youngins.
Onegai Teacher and Chobits is a nich choice if you are looking for the romantic comedy selection.
NG Evangelion and Rahxephon are both staples in the mech(but not really mech), action/drama(ish) series.

I could think of a lot more, but I would need to know in which direction you are looking. Feel free to ask.

Really anything in general, that's worth watching and owning. I'm thinking more towards action or action/comedy (hopefully with a good plot), but if there's a really good comedy or other genre to suggest (i love azumanga daioh, 4 instance), feel free too.

PS. Also, if there are any good anime coming out that aren't in box sets, mention them, but I'm aiming for sets (but again, mention single dvds that might be good)

well then Full Metal Panic Second Raid would be a great selection, although only the first dvd is available thus far.
School Rumble won't be for sale until Feb. I believe, but it is WELL worth the wait. Very funny stuff.
Paradise Kiss is coming out sometime before Christmas. Not really a comedy, more drama than anything. But it has a great story( however you really should read the manga too)

there are soo many choices... but from what is already suggested. Last exile is a great anime, a lot of animes dont have much of a "story line" and this so do have a story too. evangelion is awesome too.

If you like Samurai/period stuff with fantastic animation, you should check out the Samurai X OAV box set. On Amazon.com you can get it used for like $25-$40. You can have a taste of Kenshin without plopping down the big money for the season box sets, although these OAVs are far more serious in tone.

Cowboy Bebop is always a solid choice, and you should see this series at all costs if you haven't yet. One of the best mixes of action and comedy (and overall weirdness) is FLCL, which is a personal favorite of mine.

I always found full-length anime movies to be generally pretty good values. Ninja Scroll, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, the list goes on...

I'm waiting for my Zeta Gundam box set to come in the mail; I can't wait to rip it open and go on a mecha spree.

The Elfen Lied set is out now from ADV and also extremely good if you haven't seen it. It's definitely not family friendly though with a ton of violence, gore, and nudity but balances it well with great characters and a intricate story. (Also a better suggestion than Gantz in my opinion if you want inteligence with you bloody mayhem.)

The thinpacks for Area 88 and E's Otherwise will also be released this month I believe. Haven't seen those yet but they're on my list. For those recent titles not in boxset form I would suggest Ergo Proxy or Noein.

His and Her just came out as did Elfen Lied, those are recommended. Also, Azumanga Daioh is a good choice if you don't mind the fact that the translation note inserts are gone, and same with Excel Saga. Kino's Journey is a steal, too.

I think I read that the Excel thinpak is missing the ADV pop ups, which is a real shame. Some of gimmicks included with the DVDs are also fun. I also doubt if the Area 88 extras would be on the thinpak. Each volume had an insane amount of interviews on them. I can't remember off hand, but i think it was easily 30+ minutes of extras per disc. I don't remember any of the Elfen Lied or Rahxephon extras so you might not be missing much with the thinpaks, although Rahxephon volumes include really nice booklets.

Check rightstuf.com daily for the next week or so- they've just started their '12 days of Christmas' sale, which typically has some killer prices. For example, the 2 announced so far are Escaflowne for $24 and Inu-Yasha season 2, deluxe edition, for $50.

(just order fast, or you may find yourself giving a card saying 'IOU 1 boxset when Rightstuf re-stocks!' It can take awhile... as memory serves, my $40 Eva boxset from the '04 sale took 2 months to arrive.)

Actually, I've already narrowed the Christmas recommendations into this one thread. Please use it for all of this Christmas' recommending purposes. Thanks.
