Which do you prefer to get your manga from?
Originally I never used to read Tokyopop and simply read Viz due to them having Battle Angel Alita. However, Tokyopop has come quite away and has brought me 2 of the best manga's I have ever had the joy of reading. Love Hina & Samurai Deeper Kyo.
It's also rumored that Tokyopop is planning on releasing Kenshin manga here in the states pretty soon.
GO TOKYOPOP!

It's Viz who owns Rurouni Kenshin, not Tokyopop. Viz is co owned by Shogankukan and Shueisha. Rurouni Kenshin is publish by Shueisha, so it makes sense why Viz has Kenshin than Tokyopop.

I like Tokyopop, cus they're dabbling in old-school, such as Lupin and Cyborg 009, but Viz has some favorites, such as Vagabond and Phoenix. But a lot of the manga from Tokyopop is seriously overrated. (Although I'm one of those fans who shrugs at One Piece as well.)

Yeah, with Tokyo Pop releasing so many, I've definitely found a couple of titles I think are duds. Viz still has most of the stuff I love still, but only because they're releasing it so slowly!

I used to buy almost ALL my manga from Tokyopop - more titles I liked, pocket sized, and cheaper. The re-releases and Shonen Jump GN's are getting me to buy their titles now.

I've been with Tokyopop since they were known as MIXX, and I'll stay with em as my fave. They're the ones who are causing manga prices to be 10 bucks and under. You should of seen how overjoyed I was in wallmart to find a cardcaptor sakura manga for 6 bucks.

At the moment, I've been reading more TokyoPop stuff than Viz, but I'd say they are both pretty good.
I do have to say I like TokyoPop a lot for pushing for American Manga artists. We exist too you know, and Im sure many dont like being thought of so low. Sure there is crap, but it is a new field....
Anyway, Viz's pricing is a little better. They got the shonen jump stuff for 8$, and a lot of thier books are 9$ (1$ less than Tokyopop) It makes a difference if you buy a lot of manga.
But both do carry some good stuff. Tokyopop seems to have newer, stuff and Viz has old favorites.

Ill buy who ever has the series I like. ON my shelf I have a ton of tokyopop manga becouse frankly they put out alot of manga I wanted. Its starting to get balanced out with Viz and the other Companys as they start to release the stuff I want. And also as Viz rereleases there older stuff cheaper.

I really don't care. I buy what I want to buy.
But if I look at my manga, most of them are from Tokyopop. Tokyopop definitely has the better manga. If it had acquired the rights of Shonen Jump as well, Viz would probably have been completely ruined. But all the best selling manga, and definitely the more MATURE manga, are from Tokyopop. Viz seems to be targetting a more and more younger audience. Too bad it got Rurouni Kenshin.
Also, when Viz re-released Ranma 1/2 and Inu Yasha, it didn't print them unflipped, even though people clearly prefer the original unflipped version, which Tokyo Pop almost always sticks to.
By th way, ADV manga, the new company, should also be mentionned. They're the ones who just recently released Azumangah Daioh and Full Metal Panic.

Viz has spent 12 years doing Ranma. They are on only about the 24th or so volume. At this rate, sometime in 2010 it will be done. Twenty years is not a good rate.
Also, I think Tokyopop translations are less intrusive. Some of my Naruto suffers from big black text that has eraser marks around it not found in my originals. I see a bit of that in Tokyopop too, with the FLCL manga. It is not usually an issue, but it can degrade the experience of reading the manga.

Yeah, ADv definately did a good job with Full Metal Panic. Its got the larger size, its unflipped, and its got the color pages in it. A lot of manga dont have the first few color pages, but its cool they did that. I think Tokyopop is starting to release color pictures if the manga oringally had them. I know FLCL got it, and looking at chobits, the first few pages were proabbly in color, but weren't printed that way for the American release.
If ADV gets more series, I can see a lot of good stuff coming from them.

Ah, I don't own any manga in English....
But looking at what Tokyopop publishes, I'd probably go with them. I collect some of their anime, after all...
As to quality of translations... *shrug* dunno....
