They are probably confusing it with the older Kongo class, which is contemporary with the majority of the story. |

Zipang: looks interesting, but with all these "saw it on fansubs and gotta have the DVDs" series that I'm committed to buying this fall and winter, I don't quite have the flow for a new 26-episode series, especially not from Geneon, since they tend to be more expensive. Full Moon: Great show, many tears shed over it, but since Viz's release fails it (subpar dub, lack of sign translations, no secondary subtitle track for songs, meaning that English dub watchers have to switch on subtitles with the remote mid-episode or listen to songs that they can't understand), I'll have to relegate it to boxed set status (2 sets with 26 eps apiece, I'd wager). Koi Kaze:
X Remix: Scored it for $80 at Rightstuf awhile back...the main problem with X, aside from being fanfic fodder for yaoi fangirls, is that with so many characters, it spreads the viewer's emotional investment too thin, so it's harder to get attached to any one character. But eventually, things worked out, and all the fights and explosions sounded great in 5.1 sound. X is just plain pretty, with pretty girls, pretty boys, pretty scenery; a feast for the senses all around. Negima: Well, as a diehard Negima anime apologist, I'd say that these 4 episodes are pretty weak. But, my sight beyond sight tells me that things do get better later, though manga purists won't ever be satisfied with it, especially the final arc starting in episode 23 where spoiler[Asuna dies and gets revived thanks to time travel--the dialogue-free opening of episode 24 ranks high on my list of sad scenes in anime]. That has to be one of the least harsh "Perishable Items" summaries I've ever seen in this column |

ABOUT THE ZIPANG THING:
Uhhh... I don't think Geneon themselves really handled that (translation and stuff) and that this was outsourced (like it always is... yeah... the subtitles and stuff is usually handled by... uhh... whoever is dubbing the thing)... Outsourced... somewhere... I don't know where, but somewhere. In any case, translating duties probably fell onto them, but then, given that Geneon isn't likely to be plugging so much money into this show, it's very likely that extensive production crap/assistance/something wasn't given to the studio that this went to. I mean... unlike ROD the TV or something where Taliesin Jaffe is essentially sending e-mails back and forth between NGP and the original production team in Japan... But yes, these are assumptions... I don't even have the DVD yet. I'm just saying that... from what I hear, this release is a little below Geneon's usual standards and the above might be a good way to go about explaining it... but still, I don't know the facts and am just speculating. |

Almost all of my fave series were shelfworthy this week. That excites me. Especially Koi Kaze. I bought the dics as it came out. But to be honest, I didn't read the synopsis before I bought it. I had a gift certificate and decided that the cover looked pretty. (I am no longer that foolish when it comes to buying). Taboo things never bothered me so I loved the story. It really makes you aware of your emotions.
As for Full Moon, I liked this volume, as well as the rest of the anime, but the manga held something different for me. It was so much more enjoyable. Even though they are the same story, they are very different from one another so I recommend reading and watching. Now X, what can I say? It may be getting on up there in years but it is a classic. I bought the boxset when it first came out a month or so ago. I didn't purchase online (sadly I paid too much) but the case is awesome. It opens like a book. An awesome book. haha |

Phooey, this series isn't worth buying for me. I checked it out based on the amount of fanfare it got, but I couldn't it stand it half the time. For a series that relies on being cutesy, I just didn't like how they tried to make it suitable for children, yet overly complicated and melodramatic to the level of an angsty teen sitcom. I was constantly annoyed at how adversity was countered with silly gags and magic tricks by Meroko to make things worse, only to have Takuto scold her lightly and (*tosses hands up*) everyone's happy again. Then you have spoiler[ the undecisive, half-assed crush from Takuto] where he "always gets mad for no apparent reason" when it should be obvious even to an 8-year-old. On top of that, I found two characters especially frustrating to watch; "Jealous-bitch Madoko" and "Mitsuki's Music-hating Misanthrope Obaa-san." Good grief, I've seen stubborn and foolheaded people like Madoko, but she was beyond dislikeable. And seeing Obaa-san always gave me this feeling of, "she's just like the characters in Jigoku Shoujo that's both afflicted and afflicting enough to have everyone and herself be sent to Hell." I clapped a few times when misfortune struck these two, but like I said, (*tosses hands up*) everyone ends up happy at the end. It was also a lucky guess that from about episode 6 I knew spoiler[ Eichi was already dead.] Not much of a revelation later on, so a lot of that shock value was lost as well. Aside from the insert songs and catchy first opening (though that band is pretty annoying otherwise), there's not much else I like about this. It left a very bad taste in my mouth, and I'd even say it's affected my view of shoujo in general. The overly cutesy theme is part of the reason I don't like Air as much and why I'm a little hesitant to watch the original and new Kanon series now. |

Well, this is effectively an anime retelling of a movie involving the USS Nimitz (or at least a Nimitz-class CVN) going back in time to WW2. But who needs realism when you can have "missiles" zipping back and forth? I'm sure they included a Gulf station or two to refuel the ship too |

The Final Countdown
What do you mean? Zipang anime has that? I've read some of its manga but haven't seen any missile that ridiculous yet. The spoiler[Japanese nuclear reactor project on a ship], though, is pure crap; wonder if the anime would include this part.
Kawaguchi knew the performance difference between boilers and gas turbines, as shown in a chapter when spoiler[Mirai was ambushed by a US submarine], but apparently he didn't know that a LM2500 eats JP-8 instead of heavy oil... EDIT: And I thought it was not available in Japanese:
Kawaguchi needs to do more homework. |

For what it's worth, I found the "romance" in Koi Kaze unconvincing at best, and forced at worst. So they meet and spend a few hours together, and she falls in DEEP EVERLASTING LOVE with him based on him making a nice comment in the ferris wheel? Sorry, I just didn't buy it (figuratively AND literally ).
Tony K., you are right to be hesitant about Kanon. It's pretty high on my list of anime that get far more praise than they should. Overrated, to use an over-used term. Suffice it to say that I will not bother watching the 2006 version. |

Actually, there's more than one, though I don't know the other titles. <blatant plug> However, I do know that the second edition of The Anime Encyclopedia (due out on the first of next month) will go into detail on Zipang's predecessors. </blatant plug> |

This shelf life really makes me want to get Zipang from my Netflix so badly.....and as for the X-Remix box...I picked up on ebay for fairly cheap and I am so glad that this series got that 5.1 sound and it does show. Not only that I really like the book it comes in and the dvds look really nice themselves.

I have to agree, XXXII was much more intense. XXXIII was laughable, Atlanta didn't put up much of a fight :P PS Sorry about Forsberg (Go Flyers! ) :X |

As I mentioned in my review of Zipang vol. 1, Geneon is apparently playing hide-and-seek with the dubbing info for the series, since they didn't provide any on the DVD and I couldn't find such information anywhere online. One or two of the voices sounded kinda familiar, but I'm pretty sure it was outsourced to a more obscure dubbing company.
It's a title that I could see recommending to non-anime fans of a certain bent; my brother-in-law, who's a military history buff but doesn't normally "get" anime (although he is enjoying Planetes since he's also an aeronautics buff), has already expressed interest in taking a look at it after I described it to him. And Kamon: Well, I guess it's too much to expect that everyone will like Koi Kaze, but I would point out that it's just the start of an attraction at first and the "falling in love" thing happens gradually over the course of the series. It should work for the vast majority of fans willing to give it a try, however. |

The first DVD of Zipang is great and I plan to get the second one when it comes out in (I think) November. Cruiser/destroyer is an interesting question. Back in WW II, cruisers were bigger than destroyers. Since then, we kept making destroyers bigger until now our destroyers are bigger than our cruisers. Go figure. Might have something to do with what the navy can get through Congress or the Japanese equivalent. Just after the Revolution Congress voted to build frigates for the new U.S. Navy. Well.... we built the biggest, fastest, "frigates" anyone had ever seen and blew British frigates out of the water in 1812. (Very embarrassing) Before WW II the Germans were limited in what ship classes they could build so came up with the biggest, nastiest battlecruisers they could. (This time the Brits were smarter and called them pocket battleships so it didn't look so bad.) Anyway, it is not a battlecruiser.

I'm torn oon weither or not to get Zipang. I saw the first couple of episodes at a convention, and while the first was deadly dull, the second one left me wanting more. I will probably wait for a boxset on this one, especially since there's a lot of other things I need to get first (MiniPato, and that film that comes with it...).

I bought Vol. #1 of Zipang a month ago, but haven't got a chance to watch it yet. I was going to watch it today before the baseball playoffs, but when I got home from work I was stunned by the tragic news of Cory Lidle's death, which was all over the major networks and news channels.
I already made comments about Jinki:Extend Vol. #1 on the review thread, so all I'll say is that so far I think the series is fairly enjoyable to watch, but can get confusing with the way the timelines change on the fly. Aoba is a nice character to watch, and I don't find her annoying at all. In some sense I admire her courage, willpower, determination, and mental toughness despite her obvious physical limitations. In a way, she reminds me of another character I admire - Sora Naegino of Kaleido Star. |
