Ok, so I think this is another very very good show that's recently come/coming out. I've heard in multiple area's that the last few eps. have differed greatly from the manga. I've been reading up on the manga, and although there are some changes, I didn't notice tons. Things are moved around a bit, people introduced earlier or later, and they extend certain scenes a bit, add more dialogue, add more quiet scenes of Emma doing something, this sort of stuff. But the flavor, and the basic elements of the plot are still the same. I haven't seen eps. 8-10, which have not been fansubbed yet, although I know what happens, a la the manga. Others who have seen them raw, or whatever, say that there are some major changes in the plot in these recent eps. So, I'm curious, what are the "big changes" everyone keeps talking about? And does it seem like they are going to seriously alter the outcome of the plot compared to the manga?

As a side note, I rather like a lot of the changes they've made for the show-- they've introduced characters much earlier-- Eleanor for instance, and all of Williams brothers and sisters. I think this has helped build a bit more tension earlier on. Also, they've kept up a bit of the tension between Hakin and William for longer as well, which I think has been to the shows benefit as well. The music is a very good addition, even relatively period specific. I also have enjoyed some of the little "details" they've added in here and there-- for instance, Emma cleaning the railings at teh beginning of the show (this is new, right? I didn't see it in the manga), or the maids ironing the paper in ep. 4 or so... Hakim's listing of the spices to cook with. Seeing more of ... Al (?) in ep. 5, comparative to the manga. I dunno. These things have all seemed to add to the show for me. So far (through ep. 7, which is what i've seen), atleast for the portions of the manga that the show is covering, I have to say that the show has been atleast as good as the manga for me, if not better is some respects.

How do others feel about this, that have been watching it and have checked out the manga?

I've been keeping up with the anime and I really love it so far, but I've not seen the manga, so I couldn't answer any questions about differences. Have you read the whole series? How long is it? I was wondering if the manga was slower moving than the anime (which is pretty slow, but fittingly so). In closing... yay Emma! Makes me want to go read some Jane Austen and enjoy other Victorian fun things like the Count of Monte Cristo.. Anime hyper

The major plot changes are in the latter episodes - presumably because they were told that the series would not be continued past episode 12, and were forced to wrap up the story prematurely. It's not as bad as Hellsing or Gantz, in terms of truncated storyline - but it's very different from the manga. It's not impossible that some of the events in the last episodes of the anime foreshadow events that are to occur later on in the manga, though.

I agree. In fact, many of the minor changes work very well, and I like to think that this is due to the fact that Mori-sensei has been intimately involved with the production.

It's excellent music - Kunihiko Ryo is top-class. But I wouldn't call it period-specific...it's very modern.

The many details are probably the result of the involvement of Murakami Rico, who was originally brought on to the manga as historical consultant, from vol. 3 on. His knowledge of the period is very detailed, and he has probably provided a great deal of input to the creative process of making the anime.

And yes, the increased attention paid to Al is very nice. He was always one of my favourite side characters.

I still prefer the manga to the anime, but the anime has been a fine adaptation, even with the changes near the end.

I guess I was thinking more of the instruments used-- the ep. where they use the harpsichord, for instance. Not an instrument often heard. And although things like violins or piano work are also modern, they definitely were more common, obviously, 100 years ago. I mean, there's no guitars and drums or techno. It's not using reedy flutes a la 12 Kingdoms. It has its own flavor, which seemed to represent something of the 19th century-- still, I honestly don't know _that_ much about music from that era.

Whatever the case, yes, the music is good.

Just out of curiosity, does the anime/manga share any similarities with the original novel by Jane Austen? I read it recently and really liked it, Jane Austen's humor is so very dry and witty (reading Sense and Sensibility now) so I was wondering if the anime/manga was really adapted from it.

No relation whatsoever. Victorian Romance Emma the anime derives from Emma the manga, by Mori Kaoru, and the latter is in no way connected with Jane Austen's classic.

But I guarantee you that if you love the one, you'll love the other.

Yes, the ED theme is performed on recorders. However, there are also several IMs and BGMs in the anime, and at least one of these is performed on a harpsichord.

A harpsichord, btw, is not a piano. A piano works by striking the strings with mallets. A harpsichord plucks the strings, hence the very different sound. The mode of operation is similar, of course.

Harpsichords aren't really a period instrument for the late Victorian era. They were more fashionable in the 18th century, and by Emma's time, they had largely gone out of style. Many
private homes had upright pianos or simple organs, however.
