My birthday is comming up soon and I could use some recomendatons as to some anime to get. There are several titles I was considering, but then I realized that none of them have boxsets out, so I'm going to wait until christmas to get them. Besides, most of the titles I wanted were action and stuff like that and I'm really not in the mood for that right now. Ayways heres some titles I like and would something similar to:

Suzuka: I absolutely loved this anime! Mainly because I'm a sucker for a halfway decent anime with a male main character. But thats not the only reason, it was just a really good anime all around and very well rounded. It wasn't way to heavy on the romance; it had some comedy and drama in there to liven things up. I also liked the sports subplot alot to. Probably the biggest reason I loved the anime was the characters. Almost all them I could either relate to in someway, and could sympathize. There wasn't a single character that hated (except for suzuka sometimes, she was so dam cold at times.)

Nana: I actualy started watching this because I was already reading the manga. The reason I initially started it was because I liked the premises of the story. While the manga and the anime are very alike, I like the anime better. This is just one of those seires where it seems better as anime to me (mainly the added bonus of the music.) I really like the reality feel to the manga. It doesn't have alot cliches or anything like that (festivals and stuff like that). Its got like two different things that mesh perfectly well togeather. You one Nana who turns it into a romance/ drama and making out on her own thing. Then the other Nana brings an edgier, darker, grungier feel to the anime and turns it into dealing with the past and music anime. I just really love the characters in this anime as well.

Beck: I originally started out with the manga, and didn't like it at the time, but later checked out again and loved it. When I saw the anime, I fell in love with the series. Aside from the great music, I think its a really good coming of age story. Once more, I really liked the characters. Sometimes I feel like I could totally get how the main character felt at the beginning and how he felt there was nothing going on in his life. I also liked the romantic subplot. It was well done, and didn't take over the series, and wasn't to underated at the same time. It was just an overall good series.

Kare Kano: I liked the first half of this series, then about haflway through it went to crap. I just thought it was a well handeled sereis. I liked the characters, and it was just a good watch ( the first half).

Boys Be... : I've only seen a few episodes, and from what I've seen I like so far. Just seems like a good watch, I'll probably get it once the boxset comes out. Plus I jsut thought it was a cool concept (and as mentioned earlier, I'm a sucker for romances with male MC's)

Mansion Ikoku: only seen a few eps of the anime, but I'm currently reading the manga. I thing this is a great series. I like the characters, and find thats its just a really good series. Its pretty well rounded. Good romance with some comedy thrown in to spice things up. Plus it has a male main character and it has romance.

I"s Pure: Started with the manga first, and was actually what turned me onto manga in the first place. It my favorite manga series really. Its got a male mc and its romance. I like alot of the characters. Its really funny and just a good anime I think.

That about somes it up for the animes I've seen that contain things I'm looking for. First off if you haven't caught on, I love character driven animes. If the characters aren't likeable, I'll probably hate it. Second thing, I like romances with male mc's. While its not a must, its a definite pluss. Thirdly, I like the series to well rounded, not focussing on one thing way to much, and at the same time not letting subplots taking over or trying to be to many things at once and end up sucking at them all.

The four main series I'm really drawing from here are Beck, Nana, Suzuka. I like the comming of age apect of Beck (a little bit of the romance also), the originality, reality feel, and drama of Nana (and Beck also, minus the drama), and the well roundedness and romance of suzuka. There you have it, any recomendations would be greatly appreciated.

One more thing I want to add, if theres a music anime similar to Nana or Beck, throw it in for suggestion also.

I don't know, there's no MyAnime list here, but there's a pretty well descibed list of anime, with lots of description. I don't think this list should be locked on that particular account (though it would be nice if it was added).

Hack Sign - Ever played an end game MMORPG? If you have, you can undoubtedly relate to this show and the feel it exudes. I played FFXI for nearly 18 months (with approximately 105 real-time days play time in that 18 months Anime cry where'd my college dorm life go?!), and having the highest class character in the game for the time played, nothing speaks as well as experience. After a while, you lose all interest in leveling and items, the whole goal of the game is simply to "escape" real life and socialize with other people of a like mind while simultaneously attempting to have some sort of "appearance" of accomplishment for the n00bs. This show is about "The World" vets who have lost interest in the rather pointless quests and treasures that occupy so many others, they are intersted in the greater mysteries of the world they occupy and the friends they aquire there. Since the music seems so important to you, this is an absolute must, the music is the absolute best I've ever heard for a TV show.

Kino's Journey - Not particularly shounen or shoujo, though perhaps more shoujo in behavior, and shounen in storytelling style. Considering you too seem to have a near fixation on storytelling style/ability, I think you would really really enjoy this show. It is currently #14 on the all-time high bayesian list and is still somehow underestimated in my view. Allthough the ratings reflect the quality of the show in my mind, the relative lack of numbers of people that rate the show leads me to believe it is being underestimated.

Twelve Kingdoms - Considering your tastes for character development > action or plot, this seems like it would be an absolute gem by your standards. Although this is an absolute classic by anyone's standards that has seen it, this is one of the absolute best fantasy worlds ever concieved for an anime. It starts off seemingly slow in character development, but by the time the show reaches a semi-conclusion at episode 39, every single person who has ever seen this show felt like crying at the simple idea that there was no more.

While I know of no more shows based on bands like Nana or Beck, there are many shows that share aspects and characteristics of them. I'm not sure entirely which of my suggestions will fit your specifications, but I am completely confident that no matter your expectations, you will highly appreciate these series as a shoujo fan if nothing else.

sorry, forgot to put in myanime list. Secondly, selenta thanks for the suggestions, but those aren't the type/genre of anime I'm looking for. I want something more "realistic". So no fantasy of scifi or anything unrealistic or goofy.

I realize you put effort into this post but we have multiple threads already that will help you find anime that you might like, and right now we are as a rule locking recommendation threads because ultimately they are very low content and are of little assistance or interest to anyone but the original poster. So please check out our stickied recommendation threads, and see if you can find something you'd like.
