With school starting tomorrow, well actually in a couple of hours, I tried to remember what I did this summer. Besides trips to theme-parks, Great America and Six Flags Magic Mountain, camping and other activities with friends, I remembered I watched a lot of anime.
Which brings me to the actual topic. What anime(s) do you remember from this summer? Please tell us why. Don't just list your titles.
Gankutsuou - Not reading the novel has made this a much more enjoyable experience than it would have been otherwise. Although a lot of stuff is predictable, there is still so much other things going on that make this series entertaining. Enjoying a series for more than just action scenes makes me feel a little bit more adult for some reason. I very much look forward to volume 6, which will be available in about 2 weeks to finally finish the series.
Samurai 7 - My 1st experience with this series was bad. I had seen the first episodes on volume 2 and thought the action was stale and really slow... because they were fighting those machine samurai. But after a friend lent me the fansubs and I was able to see the first couple of episodes which contain much more fast paced fights, I ended up picking up volumes 1-2 and 4-7. I still need #3, but I'm waiting for a decent price. Being a fan of the original movie, I was glad to see the anime actually being based on the anime unlike other media that has tried to use the licence to their advantage by releasing crap media, Samurai 20XX anyone?
Final Fantasy VII - After passing on the fansubs countless times, this movie was finally available to us American fans. Although the story was not that great, the action more than made up for it, but isn't that the only reason we all bought it?
Cowboy Bebop Remix - Watching a classic anime that I used to watch all the time on Cartoon Network now with 5.1 digital surround... let's just say it was awesome. Watching my favorite episodes again made me realise why I liked this series as much as I did the first time.
Ergo Proxy - Having borrowed the first 3 episodes from a friend, this is a memmorable series because not only was it the first fansub I was able to watch of a series I actually wanted to check out that wasn't available in the states, it was also damn good. Too all you fansub haters, don't get angry at me. I plan to purchase the series come November and currently have no plans of getting the rest fansubbed.
Naruto - After I got my summer job, I had to stop watching Naruto on Cartoon Nertwork. Another friend lent me episodes 1-153 fansubbed. Watching only the fights throughout the first season and skipping to the fights during the Chusnin exams, I was able to save me a lot of time. Although I just played the series in the background while I did other stuff, including cleaning my room, eating, and organizing comic books and cards, I was really into it when Naruto faced off against Sasuke towards the end of the "1st Part". Sasuke's past were some of my favorite episodes. I just watched til that point since I heard that is where the fillers started, and could even notice myself where the series took a turn fro the worst... the very first filler episode. But it more than likely is because I love serious anime, and Naruto was really serious throughout those last couple of episodes, before turning into a "funny" show.
Well, that's what I remember most this summer. I look forward to reading [your] memmorable summer titles and hope this may stop many of those reccommendation threads, although I doubt it.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - My summer craze. I never thought this show was going to be any good, because I felt when I read the concept that it sounded pretty weak. Fortunately, I took a chance anyway, and it became an instant favorite. I spent most of the summer watching, re-watching, waiting for new episodes of, and anticipating the licensing of (which I still wait for) this program. I can't wait until I can obtain this on domestic DVDs. It's worth all the hype. Well, most of it, anyway.
Ergo Proxy - I began the summer watching this fansubbed and it wasn't until I went to Otakon that I discovered it had been licensed by Geneon. Now I'm waiting for its release here so I can get this show on crisp DVDs. Maybe then I'll actually be able to SEE what's going on in the program - everything takes place in the dark! A good show (from what I could see), though.

Who boy, that might be a LONG list. Ok ok, I'll try and cut it down a bit. Here's 5 of the shows I was watching over the summer.
Gankutsuou - The Count of Monte Cristo, among the best stories ever told. Although the anime takes an insane number of creative liberties; everything from changing the perspective to removing 1 of the 3 elements of the story, to completely changing even the nature of the story. Despite all this, it still manages to be a very interesting narrative that makes you constantly wondering what is going to happen next.
Mushishi - Wow, 'casual brilliance' is possibly the only way to describe this show. It's like a combination of X-files, Miyazaki's worlds, and Kino's Journey. The unbelievably lethargic pace of the storytelling and sheer brilliance of so many aspects of this show still amaze me. Although the quality of the episodes is inconsistant at times, the best episodes are undoubtedly some of the best episodes ever made.
Utawarerumono - A stereotypical show... only not. Not as amazing as Mushishi or visually garish as Gankutsuou, just a pretty world with really pretty characters and is just absolutely lovable in every way. Also quite unpredictable and frequently delves into much darker subject matter than would be expected from the visual style. Something of an enigma at times.
Howl's Moving Castle - Finally got around to seeing it. Definitely my second favorite Miyazaki movie. Some nice twists and takes no effort to believe the world and setting.
Voices of a Distant Star - Struck a chord with me. I'm a space kinda guy, I'm going to be an astrophysicist, and I've always wanted to be an astronaut. For those that've seen it, the brilliance of the utter simplicity of the dialogue is hard to deny (though some sure try). For those that haven't seen it, it's almost impossible to imagine how much of an impact a 20ish minute movie can make on themselves.

Things about my summer: Traveling and playing music; increasing my manga and anime collection, buying new guitar equipment finally.
Eyeshield 21 Got some great laughs out of this series. Also convinced me to buy the manga. Dang it's good stuff!
One Piece Ever since I caught up with this series, it's made waiting for new chapters and episodes that much more exciting. Anticipation is half the fun, right?
Berserk I got stalemated in Berserk somewhere around volume 22 for some reason, but picked it back up and caught up to chapter 278 in like 2 days. What an epic series. Will it ever end? (hopefully not)
Melancholy of.... stuff Watched 8 episodes of this weird show, after hearing all the hype behind it. It's definitely.... different. (super-smart reading girl makes my speed-reading feel inadequate)
And final note: Modding my ps2 was the greatest thing I have ever done. Hours and hours of gaming goodness. Made for an awesome summer.

NANA - This was the first show that I ever followed during it's Japanese release (though more have joined it as the summer progressed) and I just continue to fall more and more in love with it. It's especially interesting now since the anime just surpassed the point that the manga is out in English so now I'm seeing things that I hadn't read first.
Ouran High School Host Club - I watched this for a first time because of the hype, though said hype also made me rather not expect to like it. However I was wrong and after a few episodes found myself rather in love with the series. While it certainly doesn't sound like a show I would enjoy, it really is quite fun and I'm eagerly awaiting more episodes.
xxxHolic - another current release I'm following. This one took awhile before I really got into it. The animation in it quite frankly is the lowest quality I have ever seen in an anime. But it's story is interesting and so I eventually managed to get past that.
Blood+ - I'm still trying to catch up with the last stuff (I'm around ep 14 now I think) but this show is pretty interesting. I enjoy trying to figure out the mystery behind it, though I do somewhat wish it wasn't so long, because it's going to take a long time before I can see it all.
Welcome to the NHK! - I really do love this show, it's so crazy but also really interesting. I'm very eagerly awaiting the release of the manga in English (I believe it's out in October) because I hear that it's even better.

Let's see.....what titles stood out for me this summer? There's 2 series I watched that were really good and 2 previews for series that I hope turn out good.
1. Gilgamesh--- Oh my God this show was awesome. I don't care what anyone else thinks this series is an example of how it should be done. The voice acting was top notch and the animation was great. The story was also unique. It may sound like your typical end of the world type show but it turns into something much much more. The interactions between all the characters was really what made this show so good. You find yourself wondering which side is actually right and relating some with the characters and the personal issues some go through. The extras on the discs were also above almost anything I've seen before. They put a lot of effort into it. They even had the whole black curtains and candles for light thing going to get the actors into the right state of mind for it.
2. Hare'+Guu--- I was so happy when they showed some of this at Otakon this year. I picked this up on a whim when it first came out because I had heard it would be good. The show is soooo funny. It's very light humor and fun for any age. If you liked Azu Manga Daioh or Excel Saga. I love watching Guu eat everything and seeing it all inside of her. She even had the Statue of Liberty in there!
3. & 4.--- I saw previews for Moonphase and Speed Grapher at the Funimation booth in the Dealer's room at Otakon. They both looked like they could turn into really good shows. Speed Grapher has a drama/thriller feel to it. It looks like it'll be a good thinker anime that has more depth and plot to it. I can't wait to start getting it. Moonphase caught my girlfriend's eye and when I watched the preview episode with her I found myself being drawn in. The main character, Luna, looks so cute but has that darker side to her. I think having Monica Rial voice her is also a very good choice. I hope both shows live up to my expectations.

Pardon me, but this thread is melancholic in its own way.
You see, its topic and its conclusive tone are screaming at my face that Summer is ending and I ought to end my slacker live-a-day life already, and get back to being someone remotely smart and functioning.
Which, in relevance to the forum in general, means less anime-watching time, or less sleeping time, or record low grades, whatever I choose.

Hmmm, where to begin? I watched alot of anime this summer. Okay, so I'll start chronologically:
Bleach - I started this show a couple of weeks before school ended and finished it on the plane ride to Japan, the kickoff to my summer vacation. I love the action in this one, and the character designs were great. There were some twists and turns in the Soul Society arc, some of which I enjoyed, others I loathed, but overall, it was a great show. I haven't watched the fillers because I already have so much anime on my hands and so much work.
Elfen Lied - I didn't really like this one because it was way too graphic for me. I didn't really think the ending was as "symbolic" as other people said it was, and the storyline wasn't as great as people said it was, so this pretty much a bust for me. I think that it could've been handled better and made into a much greater series.
Hunter X Hunter - one of the highlight shows of the summer. It pretty much took me 2 months to finish it because there were alot of episodes, but I enjoyed every episode. The Hunter Exam was one of my favorite parts, and then the Spiders arc was to-die-for. Alot of people claim that the ending wasn't satisfying, but I think it ended on a great note, and the loose ends that weren't wrapped up were meant to have you use your imagination. I think it's really pathetic that a company hasn't licensed it, and that it probably never will be licensed. It's an extremely underrated masterpiece.
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - This was truly a "different" anime. I enjoyed it because it kept you wanting more, and I thought that it was hilarious at some times and creepy at others. It definitely is a show that I have to watch again so that I can watch it in its correct order and finally understand everything about it.
Hikaru no Go - this anime is hard to describe. I love it to death because it's so interesting, but I just can't really describe how I feel about it. This show has inspired me to play Go, but I just don't have the time. I can't wait to get deep into this show. Right now I'm at about episode 11, so things are just getting good.
Shakugan no Shana - haven't watched it yet, but I still have one more week 'til school starts, so you can count that it'll be in my MyAnime list by then.
There are others that I'm watching on Toonami Jetstream, but none worthy enough to go into detail about.

1. I made sure to finish Fruits Basket so I wouldn't be up in the air about the ending, which I'm glad I did. Found out there was a different approach to the one section than in the manga.
2. Bought and watched Tsukihime, based on the game. A review I read proved to be true, where the beginning part is slow and the character development of it really didn't get out there. Towards the end is when it got interesting, and had me staying up until three in the morning trying to finish the series.
3. I haven't really watched it yet, but before school gets into full force, I will watch Akira, which I borrowed a couple days ago but haven't watched yet due to work. Wish me luck
Edit: I forgot to mention Trouble Chocolate too. I thought it was good, there was fanservice in there also, but I mostly liked the soundtrack to it. Some Para Para here and there.

I tend not to watch too many anime but i've had some good share this summer.
Fruits basket - To be honest, those kind of anime barely ever made my taste but this time i wanted to expand myself a little. Overall it was a masterpiece but the story didn't unfortunately end as i rather wanted to. I have heard that the story continued in the manga but even though it's a masterpiece, this anime wasn't addictive enough as i was when i ended the greed island of hunter x hunter or the last chapter of berserk. Therefore i don't think i'll be buying any mangas.
Ergo proxy - Borderline i'm just waiting for this anime to end so i can put it in my favorites. Already since the first episode i knew this anime was going to be my favorite. I guess i'm a sucker for Horror or Psychological genre anime.
