Is teen titans an anime from japan or U.S., because I think originally it was a cartoon from the U.S remade. I always wondered because it has anime style but with robin (batman) in it.

No. It is a cartoon made in the United States that looks like anime. But it is on Cartoon Network, and it is from the US, so no. The term "anime" would mean that the cartoon is from Japan.

It's as much an "anime" as the bubbly wine that I by at Safeway is "champagne".

No, it's not anime, just has an art style that's influenced by it. (It's also pretty obvious that someone who worked on the show was a fan of FLCL--when I finally got around to watching that anime I kept getting deja vu Anime hyper.) Avatar is also an american cartoon. Not anime. See this week's answerman for a good explanation on what the term 'anime' means. ^^

We had several discussions about this last year, but the best one I read was this thread from early 2005. There were some really good comments about this topic (including one from yours truly).

Besides, Teen Titans is a show based on a DC comic, not a manga, from the 90's or something like that.

It depends on what your definition of anime is. The Japanese define anime as being short for animation, similiar to how Pokemon is short for Pocket Monsters. The Japanese categorize all cartoons as being anime regardless of its orgins or animation "style". However, the term anime has since been adopted in the English language as a loanword and the definition has evolved to refer more specifically to animation which originates from Japan. Going by the Japanese definition, Teen Titans could be considered an anime, but then so would everything from Looney Tunes to Disney films. Going by the American definition, Teen Titans is not an anime, but it is a cartoon which is based on an American DC comic book. Although Teen Titans shares many stereotyped similarites to Japanese animation, it was created by Americans for an American audience, thus it is not an anime.

[nerd]Actually, the Teen Titans comic book that the series is based off of is from the 80's and is by Marv Wolfman and George Perez Smile[/nerd]

I'm a huge fan of the Teen Titans show, and will soon be checking out the original comics. And when I first started watching it, I did think it was anime-in fact, the anime style was what drew me in. Later on, I found out the story was good and I liked the characters, so I continued, and got very obsessed(I even cosplayed the character Terra Razz). I found out it was not anime after seeing the title credits on the secong episode I was that said it was based on a comic from DC Comics. I still loved the show and continued watching, even though it wasn't anime Smile

What it was based on doesn't matter at all. You can have anime based on American (or any other country's) works, ideas, shows, etc. It just has to be produced in Japan. If Teen Titans was produced in Japan, it would be an anime.

Agreed. There have been anime of PowerPuff Girls, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Howl's Moving Castle, Earthsea, and Witchblade. None of those are from Japan, but there have been anime of them Smile

No. It's not anime and it's made in the U.S. Just because it has anime stylings doesn't means it's anime.
