Hi,

I'm not a total noob to anime but I am newish to this. I've been using the ANN encyclopaedia to find stuff to watch based on viewer ratings so I've been watching the first season of Code Geass (it rocks an 8.884 rating, #81 of 5591).

I've just finished ep 14 (Geass vs. Geass) and I'm not feeling the love for this series. Now I've been in the situation before where an anime hasn't grabbed me at the beginning but by the end it has been completely awesome (Steins;Gate springs to mind, I ditched it first time round at ep 3 or 4 but then a friend convinced me to re-watch it and it's now one of my all time favourites!).

Have I missed the point? Should I stick with it?

Right now the characters just seem a bit trite (sorry for anyone who loves it, I'm not having a go, just how I feel), Lelouch is alright, Suzaku just seems like a colaborator, c.c eats too much pizza and I know the show writers are going for "mysterious background" but meh, Kallen's alright but she's "all about the black knights". There's no great relationships so far and the plot seems to revolve around Lelouch's identity getting discovered (beware cats!).

I've now put in almost six hours on this series, I don't normally drop stuff but I'd rather go watch my Attack on Titan / Gargantia / Flowers of Evil back log unless this is going to get better.

Side note, I'm British and the "yes my Lord" thing?!??!

Unlike Steins;Gate: if you don't like it yet you probably won't come to like it.

Apparently, in Code Geass's world, the Holy Britannian Empire is actually a Jacobite absolutist monarchy from North America, because Britain was conquered by Bonaparte. Ergo, that sort of explains how the Britannians are almost wholly un-British.

As for the show, I think it's pretty awesome, and it becomes quite the morality roller-coaster ride towards the end of season one, but your results may vary.

There is no need or obligation for you to watch anything you don't like even if it "gets better later on" or not.

Personally, I was hooked from episode 1, and found the series highly entertaining and epic though I was already a big fan of the mecha genre so that helped.

You're right, it's just when most people really like something I think it's some failing in me, that I'm not getting it.

FWIW, I do like mecha stuff, I'm really enjoying the new Evangelion, and anything GITS related where the Major gets to take down some mech / think tank single handedly, that's cool! I even like the more fun / silly stuff, Lagrange, Valvrave, Vividred Operation etc.

Yeah, I'd definitely agree that if you haven't been hooked yet, you aren't going to be. I found the first series to be very entertaining, the second one not quite as much (even though it is ranked higher on the list, IIRC ... sequels get an unfair advantage using that system though). But everyone has different tastes, so don't feel bad about not being into this one. Even many of the people who like it will admit that, quality-wise, it really isn't that great a show Razz

I agree with the others, if you are not a fan by episode 14 then this show is not for you. The rest of the show is just more of what you have seen so far taken to another level.

Just to strengthen the word here, I agree that if you don't like it yet you should stop torturing yourself.

I don't understand. What about the "My Lord"? Isn't that a British thing? When I think of British I think of hooligans and a butler with moustache asking: "Would you fancy another cup of tea, milord?"

I think everyone runs across those every once in a while. One of mine was Lucky Star.

Although, if you don't exactly hate the show outright and find it at least decently entertaining why not complete it? That way you wouldn't have to worry about whether or not you made the correct decision to drop it.

Well, if you don't like the show after 14 eps. then you should stop watching it. If you have had thought about abandoning it after 4-5 episodes, it would've been a different story (I would've encouraged you to continue to watch the show).
Personally, I liked so much this series, the finale was superb (one of the best I've ever seen) and I wasn't hooked from the beginning, but certainly I was, before the 14th ep.

My advice is that, if you don't like it, then, abandon it and read a synopsis of the whole story (something that is not too short). It will take you about 10 mins (I'm pretty sure the are a lot of summaries out there). If you read it completely, then you will know what this show it's about (I guess that is ok for a "top rated" anime).. But if, for whatever reason, you read something interesting and you get hooked, then stop reading and watch the series.

Thanks for all the replies everyone Smile

I did just buckle down and watch the remaining episodes of the first season in the end. I enjoyed the intensified pace and action, but it didn't fundamentally change my opinion of the show.

I think the thing I've struggled with all through is that I don't know whose "side" I'm supposed to be on? All the characters are so morally compromised and ambiguous that I wasn't really sure I wanted any of them to succeed?

I did really enjoy the Ohgi / Villetta Nu story line, but even that was destroyed by Ohgi's actions in the end.

I don't regret watching it, but it wasn't for me.

I didn't finish it either and probably never will. For me there was no cause there worth sitting through all the deaths for.

That comes right at the end and the pay-off is huge.

For me, there wasn't a side to pick. I flip-flopped between supporting Lelouch and thinking he was a total douche, but that's what the creator(s) wanted me to do. One of the great things about this anime was that there were no 'bad' guys, it was all morally subjective. I realise that this might not be up everyone's alley, but for me it was fabulous.

Also, to reiterate on my first sentence; the pay-off is huge. Hands down the best ending to anything I've seen or read yet. So much so that I'm willing to forgive the filler eps/rushed second half of R2 and change of focus from tactics to who had the better mech (honest to god, I have no idea why either army bothered with helicopters by the end of the first season, let alone the second).

That said, if you're not enjoying it by the end of S1, you're probably right not to continue.

Edit: Damnit, I watched the ending again and now I'm sad.
