Wow, Azazel at number 1! my one copy I got from Amazon is somewhere in there...
Oh wait. It makes sense that Azazel is at number one because everyone bought it for the event application coupon! Part of the reason why I bought it too.

GJ Club? That show seemed to fly way under the radar, I've never heard anyone even talk about it. Surprised to see it rank so high.

Well, this is just the weekly ranking and new volumes can get high ranking, but it can be misleading. What really matters is the cumulative average. To see what I mean:
GJ-bu is ranked #2 this week... but here is the sales over the past three months:
GJ-bu BD avg/vol: *2,810 (3+) (Douga Koubou)
2013/03/06 *2,773 Vol. 1 (Three episodes up to Vol. 4)
2013/04/03 *2,999 Vol. 2
2013/05/01 *2,911 Vol. 3
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure vol. 5 is ranked #7 this week, but many people already bought it:
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure DVD avg/vol: *4,228 + BD avg/vol: 16,039=20,267 (5+) (david production)
2013/01/30 *6,247 Vol. 1 Limited Edition (Three episodes up to Vol. 8)
2013/02/22 *4,570 Vol. 2 Limited Edition
2013/03/29 *3,711 Vol. 3 Limited Edition
2013/04/26 *3,927 Vol. 4 Limited Edition
2013/05/31 *2,686 Vol. 5 Limited Edition
2013/01/30 18,714 Vol. 1 Limited Edition
2013/02/22 16,448 Vol. 2 Limited Edition
2013/03/29 16,234 Vol. 3 Limited Edition
2013/04/26 16,206 Vol. 4 Limited Edition
2013/05/31 12,596 Vol. 5 Limited Edition
So, those ~2,900 persons buying the new volumes of GJ-bu in the first week? That's basically all of its customer base already. This is pretty much the case for anime, except for a handful of titles.
I do expect Azazel-san Z to do moderately well though, especially given its much lower total cost (less ¥ per volume and half the volumes); not Evangelion or even Jojo good, but ok enough

That's reallly not good news. Last season averaged 9k copies sold per volume (BD + DVD) and this easily didn't even come close to half of that in the first week with the event coupon incentive. Poor Azazel.

Well I can't really explain the reason for the drop. Personally I would've bought the series anyway because I already have the first season so I couldn't not get the second season. But, you're right that it's not very good news. The event coupon is only included with the first release of the BD and DVD so if people were buying to get it, most of the sales are going to come in the first week to guarantee that they got the first release. (FYI, you have to buy all three volumes in order to go to the event.)

Oh okay. Then since you have to buy them all we won't be seeing a big drop in voumes 2 and 3 then. A lot of shows only have the event ticket incentive on the first or second volume so they sometimes experience large drops in sales due to that, like Oreshura from last season

Regarding Azazel, comedy anime almost always seem to have large drops in 2nd seasons... Nyaruko had about a 40% drop in S2, and other recent comedy anime like Milky Holmes and Ika Musume also had similar drops. While I haven't seen Azazel, a common problem with these other series is that the recurring gags get kinda stale by the 2nd season, so people aren't as interested in them as they are in the first season, so that could be why Azazel S2 sold less.

Sequels almost always sell less. It's just a fact of business.

Since Azazel's episodes are half length, it probably did pretty well with those numbers.

Azazel S2 doesn't seem stale to me. I would wait a while to see how the averages are like for the regular volumes given what GokuMew said how you have to buy all three. Barring special event volumes that have requirements, some shows also trickle in 2k, 1k, progressively less etc. over the next few weeks. Unfortunately Oricon only publicly publishes weekly top rankers and not all of them afterward
