I am trying to decide which of the following to purchase: The Anime Legends version of the Escaflowne TV series or the Perfect Collection version. The Anime Legends version is ~$45 while the Perfect Collection is about ~$90. So, I want to know what the difference here is? What makes the perfect collection double the price? I'll admit the art on the box is nicer (at least I like what is depicted better), but I can not see any other difference.

So, would someone be able to shine a light on the big difference? I am a complete newbie to buying anime, so I have no idea what a Perfect Collection entails, though many series offer them (NGE).

"Perfect collection" usually implies you've got all the series and the extras from all the individual volumes in one complete package. However, there are several different versions depending on the company. The main types include box sets, bricks, and thinpaks.

Box sets are big cardboard, wooden, or metalic boxes that contain all the individual DVD volumes in one package, like this.

A brick is one DVD case, but with flipping "pages" that are all connected to the spine. It takes up less space than a box set, but most of the bricks I have aren't very well constructed. The pages tend to pop loose from the spine, have awkward turning, and the DVDs even fall out at times. Here's an example.

Thinpaks are the slimmest and are basically like box sets, only they use those ultra slim cases taking up the least amount of space possible. Some companies like ADV will take out all the extra features in order to fit more episodes on fewer discs, while some companies don't do a thing. Here's an example.

As for the Escaflowne collections, they are both bricks. The AL box (two brick sets with a cover over them) is the newer (and obviously cheaper) version, but I've heard people complain about glitches in the DVDs. Here's one for about $30. It's cheaper because they wanted to make up for the other Limited Edition box sets that are out of print (the Perfect Collection and the old box set from a few years back).

The Perfect Collection is a differently designed brick (one large item, I think), but also includes the movie. I've not heard any problems with it, and have actually found a cheaper one here for around $60. Again, it's out of print. So unless you want to take the chance of getting the AL box with possibly glitched DVDs, then you can opt for the Perfect Collection.

I own the perfect collection, and it's nice if you're low on space- 9 DVDs in about 3 DVDs worth of space.

Unfortunately, it's a but difficult to manage the box. the outer paper sleeve is slick and slides off easily (whether you want it to or not), and the brick itself feels kind of delicate, at least to me. I worry about opening it too far and breaking the joint. And the art on the box is non existent (logo on a blue background.)

I suppose it really depends on your shelf space.

I recently bought the Figure 17 brick and it is the type like the Berserk one in your picture. Boy was I disappointed. Sad What a pain to get the DVDs out, not to mention I thought I was going to break the disc trying to get it off the little circle thing, geez.

To offer an example of a brick done right, Requiem from the Darkness is perfect. Can't get much better than that. Good job Geneon.

Well, the reason I ask is because Barnes and Noble has them both. Since I have a $50 gift card there, I was thinking of using that to puchase one or the other. Obviously, the card could cover the AL box, but if the DVDs could be glitched, I don't want to do that. On the other hand, I would need about ~$40 more for the Perfect Collection, which isn't a problem, it is just hard to do when the cheaper version is there, heh.

So, I'll try to work out my dilemma. Thanks for the excellent explaination, Tony K.
