I've been watching Spiral on COLOURS TV and the show is pretty good, though I can't say I agree with the $80 price tag.

Yeah I agree with you there, had there been a second season of spiral then this might be a purchase, such a big cliff hanger and then nothing. It's defintely a renter in my opinion, probably a buy if your into the manga.

I've heard good things about Detective Conan/Case Closed, but I've never really had the chance or inclination to watch it. That being said, sometimes movies can be really good, so I'm wondering if I'll need to be familiar with anything for the DC/CC movie(first of ten, right?) that isn't explained in it?

You'll probably be able to understand everything. I watched part of this movie (the first one, anyway) and I'm pretty sure in the beginning they give you a quick recap of what happened in the first episode(s). DC/CC is pretty episodic, So you don't have to watch every episode in order to understand what's going on.
I'm pretty sure everything will be covered for you....but if I'm wrong, feel free to corrct me, anyone.

no you're right. The movie is pretty stand alone, just be aware that ran is waiting for shinichi to come back and their feelings for eachother. All the movies give a recap for first time viewers. I just found out that it wasn't funimation who made the decision to call the anime case closed or localize it. It was the japanese animation studio. I can now respect funi a little bit more. At least they try with the japanese logo on the boxes. |

And like written above it's pretty much stand alone, and within the first ten minutes there is a 2 minute re-cap of the series plot, the exact time being 2:31 minutes .
Also....Spiral Box Set.... *eye twitch* #@$@$^#$%$# @#$!! Now they release it. After i buy the whole series *grumbles*

I'm looking forward to the movie. Lol. As for Spiral, I want to read the manga since the anime just leaves you thinking WTF?
