Sorry for not immediately jumping to the defense of someone who has 35,000 child porn images downloaded to his HD.

When you say that Manga - drawings of imaginary children, with absolutely no victims - is child porn, you are actually trivialising real child porn.

Manga is only child porn in the eyes of authorities too moronic to know better and too puritan to care.

Why were customs searching through his laptop in the first place? Can they do that?

I believe so, it's pretty much the same as them pulling you aside to check through your bag for drugs or taxable items (customs do that in the Uk). Most of the time they just ask you to turn it on to check that the laptop works and its not a bomb. I believe they do random spot checks to check for terrorist material, child pornography , drug lists etc - pretty much anything incriminating.

I had this done to me when I traveled to the US in September last year- randomly spot checked. I was sent on my merry way Very Happy

I can't help but wonder whether the thousands spent prosecuting and imprisoning this guy for a crime without victims would be better spent on safeguarding actual children. Or anything else of importance for that matter.

According to courtnews.co.nz NZ Customs intends to permanently confiscate the guy's computer, so the Saudia Arabia comparison seems like a real ringer.

What the heck kind of country are you New Zealanders running down there?

Liquor is against the law in the Quran so I can understand why Saudi Arabia does this.

Apparently one where our customs officials and child advocacy groups have little grasp on reality.

This is why if I ever plan to go somewhere else (probably gonna go to San Diego with my mom next summer), I'm just gonna take ALL of my images and videos and place them on an external hard drive and go without them. I can live without porn for a while.

I love how so many governments claim to be for freedom yet they feel free to search their things of their people and censor speech.

The world is moving towards dictatorship and there's nothing we can do to stop it. Who wants to bet on long it is before they start un-personing people?

Totally agree. One should never assume that another country has the same rules as your home country.

I think a few of them are on this forum, lol.

Given that you're from Texas, you don't have a leg to stand on.

Wait, has anyone in Texas been arrested for anime images?

I do feel bad for this guy though.

That's not was I was saying. I was saying that people from Texas shouldn't call other people fruitcakes when Texans have an infamous reputation for being loonies.

Aw come on. We may be crazy but it's the wackos over in places like North Carolina and Tennessee you gotta worry about.

Also Texas (or at least part of it) is probably gonna shift to being a liberal/left-wing state in a few decades, we have MANY hispanics and they tend to vote democrat. At the very least, my city (San Antonio) and the area around it will, I remember reading the demographics of my elementary school:

Hispanic: 96% (Not exaggerating in the slightest)
Caucasian: 4%
Black: .5%
Other: .5%

Some slight rounding but you see what I mean.
