NEWS: Takeshi Nogami's Marine Corps Yumi Manga Posted in English

Never heard of this, but I hope she gets assigned to a front line unit and deployed to Afghanistan as a grunt seraching for the Taliban.

They should turn this into anime!

I remember reading the first chapter a year or so ago.

I'm surprised there's already 28 chapters. Very educational...

I'm surprised at the lead character of this manga. Her big dream is to be a Marine of the country of "Amerigo." But,it does have a history behind it. The U.S. has had immigrants and foreigners who fought in our armed forces since it's beginnings. In a documentary called "The Irish in America,"many of those who fought in the Continental Army were either Irish immigrants or people of Irish decent.
Even in the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan had immigrants and foreigners who fought for the United States military. On that,Mr. Nogami was right on. Although,Yumi's dream of being President might not ever happen,being in the Marine Corps is a much more realistic dream for her.

You don't have to be a US citizen to join the military, but you do have to be a permanent resident. So in real life she'd never be able to join.

Also, Japanese high school girls don't speak English... and you have to pass the ASVAB (not very hard... if you speak English and paid attention in school).

Also, the jobs non-citizens can do the military are limited due to security clearances, and also naturalized citizens cannot be elected president.

So... clearly she's not good at planning.

Well,I love to see that,anastasm. Although the U.S. Constitution forbids immigrants or naturalized American citizens from becoming President of the United States,there have been foreigners who have served in the U.S. Government. Felix Frankfurter,an Austrian-born Jew who became a Supreme Court Justice. Another foreign-born politician is Mazie Hirono,a Representative of Hawaii that was born in your country,Japan.
There's also Tom Lantos,a Holocaust survivor who became a representative from California. We've had people like Alexander Hamilton (West Indies),Carl Schurz (Germany),Jennifer Granholm (Canada),and others like them who served in various capacities in American politics. Even Arnold Schwarzenegger served as governor of California. It'll be interesting to see how Yumi gets around the provision forbidding foreigners from becoming President of the United States. But,I don't know how she'll accomplish that.
