I've been told that Viz has allegedly dubbed the uncut version of Naruto which was later edited for air on the US CN. Is this correct?

It makes sense at least, to dub first then edit.
And since we're getting uncut Naruto in July, it doesn't really matter which way they did it as long as it's done, right? |

Some point much later, but this information is supposibly correct. The uncut release will begin July 2006. The Uncut airing is still TBA, sense that's completely on Cartoonetwork. |

I too have heard that there'll be a slightly different script for the uncut version, though this doesn't really surprise me. I found an article where Maile Flanagan talks a little bit about the uncut version; you can read about it here: http://www.siliconera.com/2006/02/08/narutos-voice-speaks-out/

I for one would like to thank demoneyes for posting that link. A very informative read. I also think now I am more interested in the uncut version. For me uncut versions are a bit scarey, because sometimes you buy a uncut version, and it is too different from what I have seen before, and it sort of blows away any connection I have formed.

That won't happen with Naruto, since Viz hasn't edited out much for the North American airings. I'd say about 85% of the show has been left intact so far. |

I don't much care about the dub on the uncut version, since the subs will be available on the uncut version, but it'd be nice if the dub was less "dubby" on that version. Like they could not say "Believe it!" so much, and use more of the Japanese terms for jutsu and stuff. I would hope that at least they use the proper terms in the sub tracks, like the fansubbers do.

I'm still wondering what has been edited. I know I've asked it before but either forgot or didn't receive a response so I'll try again...
Are the Naruto edits basically like the DBZ Frieza arc or Rurouni Kenshin where scenes with blood are removed or "colored" over? edit - I just read the article DemonEyesLeo posted and it was pretty good. I really like the "I'll rip your throat out" portion. And I'm also glad to hear Naruto won't be saying "Believe It" as much. I hadn't noticed but it has been a while since I heard it. How old is that article? I couldn't find it on the page. Since it says the Naruto GC is going to be out soon, I figure it was a while back. Has CN ordered another batch of episodes? But then again they still have like 20 more weeks before they use up all the new episodes, and that's if another event doesn't consume a whole month or they put Naruto on a break. |

I guess them using "sensei" and "kunoichi" isn't enough for you. I agree that heariing "Believe it!" every five seconds is annoying, but you have to understand that it was be extremely wierd hearing Maile Flanagan yelling "Dattebayo!" Kids would be dumbfounded as to what that means. Remember, the Naruto dub is aiming for the anime-fan-that-hates-butchered-dubs/kids-who-don't-know-it's-japanese crowd, not the hardcore otaku crowd. Be thankful it's mostly uncut and uses SOME Japanese terms. |

Look towards the bottom of the page, and in the url itself; it was posted in February. |

It's not, actually. I'd also like some Konoha, Kage Bunshin, Kawarimi, Katon, Raikiri, etc. I also hope that when they get to it, they use the proper names for the Chidori and Rasengan jutsu. I don't think the "dattebayo" would be necessary, especially since half the time he uses the "-tteba" modifier it's not in the form of "dattebayo" per se, but I'd reather they just not say anything at all there, or say something natural to the rest of the dialog, rather than shoehorning in "Believe it" in a way that never comes off as a natural extention of the dialog. |

I was going to respond to your post yesterday afternoon, but fell asleep and left this window open, joel. http://narutoplace.com/ -- That website lists the edits up to 20 (the webmaster's been lazy and hasn't updated). The edits are basically removing blood, changing words around, and if the time comes removing pictures of boys kissing
Maybe the time will come when Toonami will allow more "adult" words like damn or hell, since the promo for the new Naruto has Steve Blum saying "hell hathe no fury", anyone see that one yet? |

What the hell does "dattebayo" mean anyways? Is it something similiar to Kenshin's "gozario" talk? The fansubbers says it means nothing, but I find that hard to believe because they are a bunch of jokers. How can it translate into nothing. Well nothing is better than "believe it!". |

Thanks RezSav. So those were DBZ style edits. Nothing to get too worked up about. Just some blood here and there. I hope there is a difference between the Edited English dub and the Uncut English dub. I'm kind of mad because I am looking to get the 13 episode box set and the first 13 episodes only have one scene that I'm interested in, the Zabusa fight. Oh well I guess I have to wait for the second release or hope that CN begins showing it from the beginning again. |

It pretty much means nothing, like Kenshin's "gozaru" and Chichiri's "noda". And it's technically not "dattebayo", it's "-tteba". The "da" part is a japanese particle that's a slang way of saying "desu", which is politely added to most sentances. The "yo" part is like adding an explaimation point to a sentance, so essentially "dattebayo" is the self contained way of saying it. He doesn't just say dattebayo though, he'll also often say "word-ttebaa" or "word-tteba yo!", to emphasize that word. For example, instead of using the proper Japanse phrase "look at me", or "mitte yo!", he might say "mitteba yo!", or something like that, which basically just emphasizes his point. It's basically a type of wordthat the English language doesn't really use, so it translates poorly no matter how you try to do it. "Believe it!" would actually be "Shinjitte yo!". |
