The day I picked up FFVII AC I decided to look through the "used" rack at my local Suncoast, I like how the anime is separated from the other DVDs to make it easier for us anime fans, and came across a series by the name of Samurai Gun. At $20 for the whole series, I figured I would take a chance...
To my surprise, I actually felt this anime was pretty good. After looking at the reviews in the encyclopedia, I figured the reason it has pretty bad ratings is because of the ending, also the reason I believe it was in the "used" rack at Suncoast. The problem with the ending was that there was no closure because spoiler[the main bad guy didn't die, and the ending was just so abrupt that what happened to Ichimatsu was not really explained.] But the in-between episodes are what I liked. The story about the Samurai and revenge was my favorite. The other missions were not that bad either but my favorites were the rescue missions. There is just something about going into enemy territory and taking back what's yours and leaving dead bodies in the process. I admit this is not the greatest animated series. The animation was good enough, but no "wow" factor. I'm not a big fan of integrating CGI and this was no exception. The smoke from the cigarettes looked really awkward and the same CGI bullet scene was played a little too much, it even played during the intro. My favorite part of the release was ADV's English Dub. While it wasn't faithful to the Japanese version, I still found that it worked quite well. Not only that but it's more of a realistic language in that type of situation. I get really mad when I'm watching an anime intended for older audiences and I hear the word "damn" a lot. When surprised attack, I'm pretty sure I would use harsher words. My 2 other exposures to Samurai Gun were the ADV preview, which I didn't much care for since it kept repeating "Gun, Sex, Violence, and Hookers", and a discussion that was held a while back about the historical accuracy of the show. Now by no means is this series to be taken seriously. If you try to over analyze and see if this stuff really happened, it really takes away to what this anime has going for it and that’s mindless fun. If you enjoy a good animated series with action, guns, and a lot of adult content, I would definitely recommend this series. Oh and by “adult content” I don’t mean graphic sex scenes but violence and cursing. Has anyone else seen this series? What are your thought on it? P.S. - I thought the whole "I Am Samurai Gun" thing was really corny so I decided to use it as the title. I also though Ichi's Samurai Gun "costume" looked really fruity, looked like a platipus. The ones I really loved where the girls though. |

Watch the dub again. I've seen the first four episodes and it's on par with the Gantz dub. If that's not obscene enough for you, I don't know what is. But the Shredder's costume actually looks cool... or am I just used to it after a decade of Ninja Turtles? Oh and about the dub I meant I liked the fact they actually used bad language, just like Gantz' dub, because that is the type of language I would expect in that kind of situation. |
