This has definitely become a collectors item now. I can't see many of its readers voluntarily returning the original issue at all

Really? I hardly see anything collectible in a piece of garbage like this.

The fact that you can't see why it would be collectible make me think you need to stop letting your biases blind you.

What bias? It is about as collectible as an issue of Hustler which had a printing error, which is about none. Call me when Sotherbee's is auctioning off smut rags and then we'll talk.

Because of the controversy, it may sell for a premium in the short term. But in long term it probably won't have any value. So now is the time to sell if you have a copy.

No it is not legal to sell it.
It's not legal to keep it either.
So it's collectible, yes, but a stupid idea to keep OR sell.

Most printer errors don't call for recalls of the item, because of the intentionally placed risqué material.
So, it's entirely different than a garden variety printer error.

Unless Japanese law has changed recently, it is a somewhat unique loophole in that simple possession of child pornography is not a prosecutable offense. (That is the simplified version. In the other thread on this matter, enurtsol notes a couple of exceptions).
That would mean regardless of the outcome, yes, it would apparently be legal to keep it.

No court has said it is in any way illegal.
