New Young Magazine Issue Reissued After Removal of 'Inappropriate' Photo
posted on by Egan Loo
Kodansha has published the latest issue of Young Magazine, after it had been recalled and then revised to remove an "inappropriate" photo of AKB48 idol group member Tomomi Kasai, on Monday. The revised issue added a black-and-white page with an apology about the delay.
The issue is otherwise almost entirely unchanged — the only differences on the cover are the issue number (8 instead of 7), the color of the magazine logo, and the advertised release date for the “Tomomi Kasai First Solo Photo Collection Tomo no Koto, Suki?" [Do You Love Tomo?] book ("early February" instead of "February 4").
Asahi, Sankei, and other news organizations reported on Friday that Kodansha is under investigation by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department for possible child pornography charges due to the book and its promotion in Young Magazine. Masaaki Hiruma, a media commentator with experience in editing weekly magazines, projected that the incident will cost Kodansha over 3 hundred million yen (about US$3.4 million) for just revising and reprinting the magazine issue alone.
Kodansha has set up a toll-free phone number and web form so people can contact the publisher to return copies of the recalled 7th issue.
