I'd be all over this if the dub didn't make me cringe.

Shana without Kugi isn't Shana.

Wow, it's so cool that they're doing this! I'll definitely watch it this weekend... Already pre-ordered my copy, but I want to show my support - this was one of my favorite arcs of the anime and I've heard the film version is even better!

Maybe with your ears, but I don't have a problem with her said voice. I could understand however if you are using headphones to listen/watch anime.

"Anyone who disagrees with me is a troll" is not a good life-philosophy my dear friend.
I've heard enough Kugimiya to know that I want to never hear her again.

I love Rie when she uses her deeper voice. Getting typecast is the worst thing that's happened to her.

The movie was great, but Cherami Leigh simply cannot compare to Tabitha St. Germain, who is one of the best in the business right now (she's been doing it since the mid-80s)...
I would've rather FUNi use Brina Palencia for the role if they absolutely had to recast. I think Brina would've not only sounded closer to both Tabitha AND Rie, her voice would've sounded more unique and stylish (again, like both Tabitha and Rie). Cherami's a decent voice actress, but she really only has one voice that she uses for all of her characters, and it's not terribly interesting-sounding. Her Shana sounds no different from all of her other roles, and there's very little character or individualism coming from her voice. It's an average performance at best, and it's not memorable at all.
The other voices were a mixed bag. Some were better than Ocean, some weren't. The best was probably Kent Williams as Allistair, who I slightly prefer over Paul Dobson, who himself was really good.
Cherami is FUNimation's flavor of the month. She's being cast in everything at the moment. If this were two years ago, I bet you it would've been Brina, who was also FUNi's flavor of the month once upon a time. I sometimes wonder whether FUNi even holds auditions anymore. I at least get the impression that Ocean casts based on the voices instead of who the director's friends are, same with NYAV Post. I know the entertainment business is sometimes about "who you know", but this has gotten ridiculous. Justin Cook has said that he tries not to make English dubs sounds monotonous, but with the way FUNi works, when they realize that they have been casting one person over and over (Brina), they move on to someone new (Cherami). Before Brina, it was Laura Bailey. Who's next? Monica Rial (it's looking that way)? Tia Ballard? Alexis Tipton? Trina Nishimura? Who's after that? Lindsay Seidel? Jad Saxon? All fine voice actors, but none of them should be overused like they are now. Luci Christian, Colleen Clinkenbeard, Jamie Marchi, Brittney Karbowski, and Stephanie Young have also been used in pretty much everything. What's sad is that FUNimation has, lately, been dubbing... pretty much every anime released in NA, and they know this (just look at their crazy lawsuit with Sentai).
I also don't understand why they managed to get the Ocean cast back for Black Lagoon, and not Shana? I can understand maybe it could've been a little pricy for 50+ episodes and a movie, but I don't get the impression that they really made much of an effort. According to Cherami, they tried to get the Ocean cast back down to Texas to record. You realize how IMPOSSIBLE that is? With how FUNi also screwed over the Trigun cast (yes, they did screw them over. According to Dorothy Fahn and Jeff Nimoy, they would've LOST money in FUNi's offer for them to reprise their roles. Why not record the goddamn film in California like Hellsing Ultimate?), it would've been practically volunteer work for Tabitha St. Germain to get a work permit in the US, fly down to Texas, and find a hotel to stay in (with her own money), record 50+ episodes and a movie, and be paid crap. As an actor myself, the way FUNimation handles their dub casting makes me quite angry.

You know as well as I do that dubbing Japanese anime is not something anyone can just do. You have to be accustomed to it, or else it overwhelms you.
I heard a rumor that some of the Hollywood actors/actresses who dub Ghibli films struggled with it a lot, but Crispin Freeman did in in 1/4th of an hour. You may not like people using the same people over and over again, but lip syncing and dubbing is not a skill anyone can do.
I'm not defending Funimation one bit, but I can't blame them for using the same VAs from Dallas, since these are the only people in range, which have the skill to dub. Also, even if they did use different VAs, what's the chance you'll complain about it?
Ocean Studios seemed to use from VAs we never heard about in Death Note, like Shannon Chan Kent and that guy who does L and look how many haters that dub has, while Escaflowne has the typical VAs, associated with Ocean Studios and that dub, while not the most loved, isn't as hated as much as Death Note's. Same with dubs using Animaze. If Wendee Lee's not in one of those, then it's a "once in a blue moon Animaze dub."
