Because it looks anime although it's made in America.

No, anime-related needs to be related to a particular anime, or director or such...
Teen Titans just features art that is somewhat anime inspired. -t |

Now are there Japanese members on the staff of these shows? Which could explain why they look like anime? |

In a country with a large negative trade deficit and relatively high ethnic diversity, that's hardly surprising. |

Well, yes and no. It's the producers, directors, character designers and other KEY staff that affect how an animation looks. The whole thing could be animated in Japan and look nothing like anime. Take for example the simpsons, whcih is animated in Korea, but is based entirely on Groenig's designs and storyboards created by american staff. Likewise, the A show could be animated entirely in North America, but by a studio that is very influecend by anime, and be almost indecernible from anime. There are many (mostly amateur) productions made by Americans (not of Japanese descent) that look much more like anime than Teen Titans does. I'd like to tell you that the Teen Titan character designs look (a little bit) like anime because the creators were fans of anime and were influenced by it. But, its worth noting that at least two of the character designers for the show appear to be of Japanese decent. But neither of them ever worked in the Japanese industry, and I assume they're born & raised in North America. I also don't know if either of these two are responsible for the conceptual character designs of the main characters. Regardless, a few cosmetic similarities does not make something "related" to anime as far as entry into the encyclopedia is concerned. So the whole point is moot. Something is related to anime if it is 1) is directly related to a specific anime or manga title, 2) features the work of notable anime / manga staff, or 3) is highly anime influenced (much more than Teen Titans, which doesn't IMHO "look like anime"). In the coming years we're going to see hundreds, if not thousands of animations from around the world that are influenced somewhat by anime. There's no reason to be including all these in an anime encyclopedia unless they are noteworthy in a special way. -t |
