I noticed that a lot of the fantasy anime titles we know often deal with mystical artifacts and enchanted weapons of old.
So I was hoping to ask the community this: Do we know of any particular weapons that iRl have a story to tell? For example: The Masamune katana's a recurring weapon in anime and video games (Sephiroth come to mind), but what IS the real legend behind this, and how different is the treatment from the original legend? _____________________________________________________ Fire away guys, be it bladed, blunt, thrown or propellant-based! |

I don't know much about it, but what I do know (at least from what I've read) the Masamune isn't an actual sword. Rather, it's the name of the best swordmaker in all of Japan. I don't know what period he lived in or his full name. But anyway, many anime series and games use his name to show that their particular Masamune sword is the ultimate sword.

Yup, yup!
I've heard that the katanas he built are still as sharp as they were when he finished crafting them. I remember there being a legend involving flower petals and a stream...but the details escape me. Is it true that his sword would never harm the innocent? And what's his connection with the swordsmiths Muramasa and Murasame - were they rivals? |

Here is a Wikipedia article about Masamune. It should explain all of the questions. Personally I find it rather interesting.

Awesome, thanks for the link. I love to learn stuff like this. I remember the Muramasa being proclaimed evil. It wasn't in an anime, but in the game Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven. The Muramasa was used to kill demons, but was so evil that it also took your life force.
I remember the Muramasa on Samurai Deeper Kyo, but I don't remember hearing that it was evil. I think I remember that the sword was sought after by Demon Eyes because it was supposed to be one of the best crafted sword ever created. |

Omoshiroi...
But still, I wonder why Square connected such a divine blade to somebody as tainted as Sephiroth? Ty for the info, that cleared that bit up! Anybody heard of the Winchester family curse? Winchester family curse? |

I think I know that curse. Isn't their house haunted or something? I wikpedia'd it and found out this. I think it's the right thing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winchester_Mystery_House

Sephiroth had his blade back when he was in SOLDIER. Back then he was the ultimate sign of good (until...well we know what happened). It's probably also a testament to Sephiroth's skill as a swordsman as the Murasame sword is often bestowed upon only the best if not THE best swordsmen in whatever story it appears in. Also, Sephiroth is the "One-Winged Angel." |

I was inclined to think that Sephiroth was a "Fallen" angel given what he was trying to do.
Perhaps the blade, still sensing Sephiroth's goo intentions, as misguided as they were, allowed itself to be wielded? "The worst atrocities in mankind were often done with the best of intentions." And on the matter of cursed blades, any other legends out there? We already know about the Muramasa and Murasame, any European legends out there. And don't say Soul Calibre! |
