I've seen alot of anime with interesting characters but I think that Vandread, Princess Mononoke, trigun, and Cowboy bebop (just to name a few) had characters that stood out. Larger than life characters like Vash the stampede (able to joke after tough situations) off of Trigun, or characters that have problems that effect us in real life like Hibiki and Dita, or Meia off of Vandread and spike and jet of cowboy bebop (love life problems and personal drama. Characters that stand against an unstopable enemy like Prince ashitaka and san (princess Mononoke) off of PRINCESS MONONOKE. They all have qualites that we admire and have respect for, these characters make a anime series or anime movie interesting and keep us watching.

What characters stood out for you and kept you interested in what you were watching?

[EDIT: Adjusted the topic name so it wouldn't be as long-winded. And thanks for posting actual reasons. -TK]

One of my favourite characters is Ryoma Echizen from Prince of Tennis. He's one of my favourites because he is only 12 years old yet he acts mature for his age. He is young so everybody assumes he's terrible at tennis but he always proves them wrong. He never backs down from a challenge and no matter the situation he always finds a way out of it. He can adjust to any situation and come out on top of the other guy and win the match. I love how he never backs down from anybody. If someone bigger then him walks up to him he just stares them down. He has no fear. He has lots of determination and drive. I DON'T like him because he is TOO serious at times and all the girls like him and he doesn't take advantage of that. He could go out with tons of chicks but instead he practices.

Let's take my avatar, Battou from Ghost in the Shell. He at first seems to be very simple. Muscle and not much else, if that. However he does things that show he has a heart, and is compassionate. He spoils his pet, even though it makes his routine predictable, and thus making his life more in peril from those who would harm the country.

But all in all, he keeps things as simple as possible in order to do what he does as best he can.

For the same reasons I like Sosuke Sagura from Full Metal Panic. As long as he is not on the battlefield, he tries his best to be a gentleman. Except there is always something for him to think he is back on the battlefield.

I would first have to agree with Anime_Newcomer and say that Ryoma is one of my favorites in how he always tries and gives his best (something I should try to do more often... Anime smile + sweatdrop )

Even though he is good, that would not be my first choice. My first choice would have to be Mizuki Ashiya from Hana Kimi. I just love how she is so courageous and she is able to cross an ocean to meet Sano. There is no way that I would ever be able to do something like that. Then she is always so nice to anyone that talks to her and helps with their problems even when she has her own problems to deal with. Lastly, she is just so funny to read about and I can't wait to find out what happens with her and Sano in the end of the series.

I like characters that show dedication, compassion, and the ability to learn. I guess I also like a certain ablility to "see". Not all my favorite character have all these qualities but all have some.

Examples: Kiba in Wolf's Rain. He see's Paradise, he trusts his instincts. He becomes more able to work with the others in his "pack", even the Humans.

Reki, Haibane Renmei: Dedicated to coming through her situation, one way or another. She genuinely is there for others, what make the differences she is. She's quiet but strong.

Kino: Compassionate, but as an outsider, she see's things differently and through a lot of the BS we take for granted.

Arjuna: She is confused about what she should do, but she's in an unusual situation. She learns, she grows, and over time she becomes comfortable with what she has become.

All the Best,

Nani?

My favourite character changes from time to time, and today it’s probably Mugen from Samurai Champloo.

I love his "don’t give a rats ass" attitude and his lack of respect for anyone or anything, I find inspiring. The thing I really love about Mugen isn’t his fighting style but it’s just the fact he doesn’t give a F*** about anyone else, and could give a S*** what happened to others.

What a ledge

My favorite character is Sasuke from Naruto. He's cool, badass, and strong. He also has a tortured soul (whoah, that sounded Goth). His quest for power is what keeps him calm and willing to open up a can of whoop-ass. I don't care spoiler[if he turned evil and went to Orochimaru to gain power. So what? He has to kill Itachi.] Plus he's got the Sharingan, which is by far, the coolest Bloodline Limit.

My second favorite character would have to be Jin from Samurai Champloo. He's also calm and cool. He's skillful and smart. Overall, he's just an amazing character.

I think Motoko Kusanagi is a great character. She could be considered a role model because of her strength, both physically and mentally. She's a great female character; she's smart, a team player, and knows how to make the best of a situation.

Guts from Berserk.
There is this thing about the guy... he just freaking wont die. No matter who or what you put him againts: people, crazy people, monsters, demons, animals, empires or even gods, he just WONT die. I like his will to live, it is quite inspiring.
Another thing is Guts doesnt take crap from no one. He keeps to himself but when you cross him you know you`re in for an ass-whooping.
Next, he is just plain CRAZY. Like the time he spoiler[cut off his own hand during the Eclipse]. Like a real man. That certainly took some heavy brass balls, and I am sure his are nothing shorter than titanium-class.
And did you see his sword? This guy has the strength of a 100 people. This is the men`s man. And aint that something?
Plus he spoiler[only has one good eye left] which sort of makes him a pirate, and pirates are cool by default. So there.

I have quite a few favorite characters, one that seem to stand out in this situation was Genko, from Mushishi. He's a good person, always calm and nice. He is very knowledgable and always thinks thoroughly about the situation. Other than that tho, I think there's quite a few characters who are quite like him, but the show made him stand out much more.

I'd have to pick Aramaki, the head honcho of Tokyo's Section 9
and Major Kusanagi's boss.

The man's as cunning as a snake tactics-wise, and knows how to manipulate people, and is decisive. I also respect the fact he only uses his skills to protect his team and the country that he serves - it speaks moutains about his conviction, dedication and his sense of justice.

He may be a bit of a backstabber at times, but that's another reason I respect him - he knows when following the rule of law matters, or when it's time to follow his gut instinct.

And most importantly, the man is realistic. He goes into a situation knowing what to expect, and allows for any potential poblem he forsees. No flowery words, no fancy talk - he's straight to the point, and does what he can given the moment with no regrets.

Aramaki - a hardcore professional.
