I heard rumors that Samurai Pizza Cats was purchased by Bandai shortly after Saban sold his company to ABC. Can someone confirm this?

I guess it's possible. Back when it was first released in japan Bandai invested interest in it by releasing a series of SPC model kits so they may have bought the rights if/when they became available. However, I've never heard such an announcement and it isn't reflected in the Encyclopedia so they could be keeping it a close secret, but I doubt it.

I may be wrong, probably am, but sometimes companies have to by a batch of series to get one that they plan on using. maybe Samurai pizza cats is a part of a batch. Ugh don't listen to me anymore...

Well, Bandai does have interest in several former Saban properties in the US such as Escaflowne, Power Rangers, Xyber 9, Digimon, and many others. However aside from Escaflowne (which was theirs to begin with) I don't think they had enough interest in any of the other properties to want to take on any of them, let alone the excess bagage of additional titles in a package deal.

Speaking of Escaflowne, is there a US release available of the series? I recall seeing 1 or 2 episoded of this on Fox a long time ago, but never heard anything else about it on this side of the pacific.

The entire series, plus the movie, are all out on DVD and have been for awhile. |

Ahem, going back on topic, I really do hope SPC was purchased by Bandai, because I would rather see SPC handled by a more dedicated, anime-faithful company than ABC ('cause don't forget, Saban sold his company to ABC).

i just want to see it released on DVD. Given that edits -were- made to the dub, it's unlikely that a dub/sub release would be done over here (unless it's done like bandai did ronin warriors). if anyone, i'd suggest rhinomation might hold the license, since they deal in old cartoons and anime.. but they're kinda slow about releasing stuff. |

I have to agree with Cookie there. Samurai Pizza Cats, if it gets released, won't come with a sub track. The editing is too all over the place. Its like what Harmony Gold did to Robotech, except much worse.
But the result was damn funny. I also don't think its popular enough to be given priority on release. Those who saw it and liked it REALLY liked it, so there might be a chance. The last time it was broadcast in Australia was 10 years ago and I don't think it ever got released on VHS at all anywhere. I think Saban had some reason for not releasing it but I can't remember for the life of me what it was. All the copies I watch are taped off TV. Well, it gave them the money to introduce MMPR... |

If we get Samurai Pizza Cats they better not give us a subbed version. The show was great BECAUSE it was such a hilarious hack job. They ad-libbed most of the scripts. I don't care what the original was like; no way was it as good as the dub.

I remember when Samurai Pizza Cat's first appeared on a local station back some six or seven odd years ago. I was really perplexed at first, because it looked very kiddish, and even when I was a kid, I never really liked kiddish stuff (I used to be very mature for my age, I seem to be backsliding these days, damn). But I'll try anything but terminal illness or being shot in anything but the arms once, so I watched it...and laughed. It was such a wildly bizarre and hilariously hacked-up show. I would love to have it back, because it dissapeared not too long after it appeared.

Why not the subbed version, Answerman? Sure the dub was better, but I think the sub deserves honorable mention as well. After all, it IS the original and without the original there never would have been a dub!
Besides, I'm sure those who have seen the dub would want to see the sub anyway to see how different it was. I'm one of those kinda guys who likes to see both sides of the coin (or disc in this case). -- Sam the Methid Man |

I dunno, I can't see much of an interest in the subbed version of Pizza Cats. I'm sure it's somewhat amusing, but the real charm of the Saban show came in how much of a sloppy, hastily produced dub it was. "It's a good day to be evil; I don't even care whether I have eyebrows or not!"

It comes down to cost too. Why sub the original that there's only moderate interest in when what fans want is the Saban dub which would take little work to release.
